The Ruling Class (1972)

Synopsis:
A member of the House of Lords dies in a shockingly silly way, leaving his estate to his son... Best British film EVER.
This movie has EVERYTHING! Does it have musical numbers? Yes, it does. Beautiful costumes, fabulous sets, serial killers, witty dialogue, burlesque striptease, opera and aristocracy, romance and insanity, jealousy and drama, comedy and theology? Yes, yes, yes!!! Oh, why couldn't there be more films like this? In a way, it reminded me of "The Ninth Configuration" although that movie lacked humor. Peter O'Toole is just gorgeous, as well. My father (psychiatrist) says that this film is just about the only accurate film representation he's seen of MANIA, but when i asked him about it, he didn't recall the musical numbers. So i suppose it's got something for everyone. I could write about THE RULING CLASS for hours and hours and compare it to everything in the entire world but i don't want to give anything away. This is an absolute MUST-SEE for anyone with an interest in film, England, mental disorders, or dancing the Varsity Rag.

Synopsis:
A lesser-known but memorably bizarre giallo thriller, this unusual shocker has a petty thief named Antoine falsely sentenced to death for the murder of a high-class prostitute at a brothel run by Madame Colette. The first of the film’s risible plot machinations has the wrongfully condemned Antoine putting a curse on his accusers, escaping as he is about to be guillotined, and then being decapitated anyway after leading authorities on a motorcycle chase.
One of the judge’s friends is a doctor named Waldemar who does experiments on the deceased non-killer’s eyeballs; when the judge is murdered, everyone is sure that Antoine is getting revenge from beyond the grave. It certainly seems coincidental that everyone who is being murdered was at Madame Colette’s brothel on the night Antoine was arrested, but the real killer was there too, and gorily claims several more victims before being chased up the Eiffel Tower in the film’s mind-boggling conclusion.

Madadayo (1993)

Synopsis:
Madadayo is a 1993 Japanese film. It is the thirtieth and final film made by Akira Kurosawa. It was screened out of competition at the 1993 Cannes Film Festival.
The main story of the film is based on the life of a Japanese academic and author, Hyakken Uchida (1889–1971). The film opens with him resigning as professor of German, in the period immediately before the Second World War. The plot of the film is centered on his relationship with his former students, who care for him in his old age. The title, Not Yet in English, is an allusion to an ancient Japanese legend mentioned in one scene of the film, of an old man who refuses to die.
This story is constantly referred to in the movie, as every year on the old man's birthday, his students throw him a party in which they all ask him, "Mou ii kai?" ("Are you ready?"). He responds by drinking a large ceremonial glass of beer and shouting "Mada dayo!" ("Not yet!"), implying that death may be near, but life still goes on. The movie also covers the events that transpire in between these birthdays, such as his moving into a new house, his discovery of (and loss of) a
beloved house cat, etc. As the years progress, the annual celebrations shift from a fraternity party atmosphere to a gathering of families, and the ceremonial large glass of beer that Uchida drinks changes as well, but he always completes his full glass.

Life in the Undergrowth - Invasion of the Land ()

Synopsis:
The documentary tells how invertebrates became the first creatures of any kind to colonise dry land. Their forerunners were shelled and segmented sea creatures that existed 400 million years ago. Some of them ventured out of the water to lay their eggs in safety, and Attenborough compares those first steps with today's mass spawning of horseshoe crabs off the Atlantic coast of North America. The oceans were abandoned altogether when the land became green with algae, mosses and liverworts. The earliest ground-dwellers were millipedes, which were quickly followed by other species. Springtails are shown to be smaller than the head of a pin and, for their size, can jump immense heights. The velvet worm hunts nocturnally and has scarcely changed over millennia, while the giant centipede can kill instantly and is shown hunting bats in Venezuela. Mating habits are explored, including the unusual ritual of leopard slugs and the meticulous nest maintenance of the harvestman. The arrival of earthworms was of great importance since they changed the nature of the soil, leading to a proliferation of plant life. Despite their aquatic ancestry, many invertebrates, particularly with those with no exoskeleton, need a moist environment to keep themselves from drying out. Finally, a creature that has adapted to a desert habitat, the scorpion, is shown as it pursues its dangerous courting dance, followed by the birth of up to fifty individuals.
