The Atomic Cafe (1982)

Synopsis:
The Atomic Cafe is an acclaimed documentary film about the beginnings of the era of nuclear warfare, created from a broad range of archival film from the 1940s, 1950s and early 1960s - including newsreel clips, television news footage, U.S. government-produced films (including military training films), advertisements, television and radio programs. News footage reflected the prevailing understandings of the media and public.
The film was produced over a five-year period through the collaborative efforts of three directors: Jayne Loader, and brothers Kevin and Pierce Rafferty. For this film, the Rafferty brothers and Loader formed the production company "Archives Project Inc." The filmmakers opted to not use narration, and instead they deployed carefully constructed sequences of film
clips to make their points. Jayne Loader has referred to The Atomic Cafe as a compilation verite, meaning that it is a compilation film with no Voice of God narration and no new footage added by the filmmakers. The soundtrack utilizes atomic-themed songs from the Cold War era to underscore the themes of the film.
Though the topic of atomic holocaust is a grave matter, the film approaches it with black humor. Much of the humor derives from the modern audience's reaction to the old training films, such as the Duck and Cover film shown in schools. The film was released in April 1982. Its release coincided with a peak in the international disarmament movement, and the
film received much wider distribution than was the norm for politically-oriented documentaries. It rapidly became a cult classic, and greatly influenced documentary filmmaking.
One of the filmmakers, Kevin Rafferty, was later befriended by a young Michael Moore who was seeking advice on how to make his first film Roger & Me. Rafferty ended up becoming the cinematographer on the film and acting as a filmmaking mentor to Moore - who has acknowledged the influence on his own filmmaking. The UK premiere screening in the British House Of Commons in October 1982 tied the film to then ongoing debate in the UK
about the deployment of the cruise missile against the Soviet threat. The film was also screened at the London Film Festival
and nominated for a BAFTA award. The film was released on home video in the UK in 1983 by Virgin Video (VVA 028).

Heaven's Gate (1980)

Synopsis:
Heaven's Gate is a 1980 western movie based on the Johnson County War, a dispute between land barons and European immigrants in Wyoming in the 1890s. The film's production was plagued by cost and time overruns, negative press, and rumors about director Michael Cimino's allegedly overbearing directorial style. It is generally considered one of the biggest box office bombs of all-time. It opened to poor reviews and earned less than $3 million domestically (from an estimated budget of $42 million), eventually contributing to the collapse of its studio, United Artists, and effectively destroying the reputation of Cimino, previously one of the ascendant directors of Hollywood owing to his celebrated 1978 movie The Deer Hunter, which had won Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director in 1979. Cimino had an expansive and ambitious vision for the film and pushed the film far over its planned budget. The movie's financial problems and United Artists' subsequent demise led to a move away from director-driven film production in the American film industry and a shift toward greater studio control of films.
The film's actors included Kris Kristofferson, Christopher Walken, Isabelle Huppert, Jeff Bridges, John Hurt, Sam Waterston, Brad Dourif, Joseph Cotten, Geoffrey Lewis, Richard Masur, Terry O'Quinn, Mickey Rourke, and Willem Dafoe in his first film role.

The Caravan of Pride ()

AKA:
موكب الاباء >> Arabic
Mawkeb-ul Abaa >> Arabic

About:
A film about on the aftermath of Karbala.
The Caravan of Pride (Mawkeb-ul Abaa) is an eye-opening movie which skilfully portrays the heart wrenching series of events that unfolded after the martyrdom of Imam Hussain. After the massacre which took place on the plains of Karbala, the remaining members of the Family of the Holy Prophet (saw), who were not killed in the war, were taken captive and paraded in a humiliating and degrading fashion from Kufa (Iraq) to Shaam (Syria).

After the Caravan were paraded through the most difficult of conditions, underwent the most excruciating pain and were afflicted with the greatest of torments, they were finally brought to Yazids Palace in Damascus, Syria. It was here, in the very stronghold of Yazid, that the light of Truth pierced through the dark veils of ignorance Satan had thrown over the eyes of the Muslim masses, it was here, under the eternally damned eyes of the tyrant Yazid, that Syeda Zainab, the daughter of the ever victorious Lion of Allah, Ali ibne abi-Talib, delivered a unparalleled, pivotal and crucial sermon which awoke the people of Damascus from their deep slumber of heedlessness and shook the foundation of the Umayyad Dynasty, sending it crumbling to the ground. It was here, that Imam Zain ul-Abideen, in such magnificent words of eloquence, informed the people of Damascus who exactly it was they were oppressing by telling them the relationship he holds with the Holy Prophet, his great grandfather. Thus was the revolution of Imam Hussain completed, a revolution against injustice, a revolution against tyranny, a revolution seeking honour over humiliation, truth over falsehood, courage over fright, righteousness over immorality, knowledge over ignorance, a revolution whose shockwaves continue to resonate thousands of years later, and a revolution, an eternal stand against corruption, which proves to be the source of inspiration for humanity at whole.

PINOY SUNDAY is not a typical Taiwanese film. Firstly, it plays out primarily in Tagalog, with only occasional snippets of dialogue spoken in Taiwanese, Mandarin or English. Secondly, it maintains a fairly light-hearted tone, telling a simple story of Filipino migrant workers without feeling compelled to get bogged down in social commentary or berate the injustices of an unfair society. Instead, Malaysian-born writer-director Ho Wi Ding lets his film ride for the most part on the shoulders of his two lead actors - Jeffrey "Epy" Quizon and Bayani Agbayani - a task they effortlessly accomplish through their natural charisma and frequently hilarious onscreen chemistry.

The Forgotten Woman (2008)

Synopsis:
Inspired by the 2006 Academy Award® nominee for Best Foreign Language film, "Water," this documentary tells the story of some of the 20 million Indian widows who are abandoned by their families and literally turned out into the streets when their husbands died. "Water" was a fictional recounting of this terrible tradition, set in 1938. "The Forgotten Woman" is true, and happening today. Written by Anonymous

Gifted to her husband and his family at the age of 5, and after becoming an adult a young woman subsequently gave birth to 10 children. Most of the children re-locate, never to be heard from again, the husband passes away, and this lady ends up at Vrindavan. Another lady, married at the age of 11, and who also ends up at Vrindavan after the passing of her husband. These 2 heart-wrenching stories are just the tip of the iceberg, amongst many other equally painful stories of women, forced to live in destitute conditions. They believe they will obtain Moksha at this holy site, but wear drab clothes, no ornaments nor make-up, are only permitted to wear colorful clothes during Holi. They sing at the Bhajan Mandir, paid a pittance, fed rice and lentils, often sexually molested, and shunned by everyone. Eighty percent these widows come from West Bengal, while others re-locate here from Rajasthan, Gujarat, and other locations. This movie also documents ground breaking work done by some woman's organization, and the apathy shown by politicians in a country that ostensibly claims to be nuclear-powered, and hi-tech, while most Indians are not even aware of the plight of these women, including the Mrityu Ghar (Death House), where quite a few aged and ailing widows end up spending their last days on Earth.

A documentary about understanding the concept of time since the history of mankind.

Time – what is it? St. Augustine wrote, “What, then, is time? If no one asks me, I know. But if I want to explain it to someone, I do not know.” Perhaps we should ask: Did time have a beginning? A very old question, indeed. But how can we imagine a world before time began? If we count backwards beyond the clock, beyond the calendar, three and a half billion years, we arrive at our own beginning – the dawn of life on earth. Science has a word for it: biogenesis. The birth of life. With life, nature created a new kind of time; more advanced, more evolved from the time of the physical world. Memory and expectation provided us with a competitive advantage. Memory and expectation gave birth to the concept of a past and a future. Now flash forward three and a half billion years. Humanity rules the earth. Humanity is wrapped tight in ticking time. But time ticks on towards the unknown. In physics, space is represented as three dimensions. Time is represented as the fourth dimension. To describe time, we are often asked to think of objects in motion. For instance, time has been compared to the cable that drives the quaint cable cars of San Francisco. The cable car attaches itself to something that’s hidden, something that’s to an extent, mysterious. It is moved by a mechanism you don’t know and cannot see. It just moves you along – takes you on a ride. At birth, we are clamped to a buried cable, time. And at death, cast loose from its passage. Or are we? The answer lies somewhere in time, yet an understanding of time remains as elusive and mysterious as life itself.

The Cave ()

Synopsis:
While it might give spelunkers a few helpful hints about using their equipment, The Cave is strictly routine as an Alien-styled monster show. The film's major achievement is its impressive setting -- not a real cave under the Carpathian mountains (where the ill-fated characters are exploring "the Amazon of underground rivers") but a lavishly convincing cave set built on a Romanian soundstage. This gives first-time director Brad Hunt (a second- and third-unit director on the Matrix trilogy) the movie's only claim to originality, as the cavernous interiors become a death trap for most of the nine-person team (led by Cole Hauser, and including Morris Chestnut, Daniel Dae Kim from TV's Lost, and Coyote Ugly's Piper Perabo) that's exploring the maze-like cave for reasons never fully explained (maybe they just wanted to test out their fancy gear). They're not alone down there, and creature-feature specialist Patrick Tatopoulos borrows from the H.R. Giger design-book with some gnarly critters that, in turn, borrow elements from The Thing to foment suspicion and anxiety among the dwindling crew of survivors.

Starring:
Piper Perabo
Morris Chestnut
Cole Hauser
Eddie Cibrian
Lena Headey

Dreadnaught (1981)

AKA:
Yuen Biao

Synopsis:
Yuen has crafted a terrific movie it is tightly plotted with excellent performances from a top notch cast and breathtaking action scenes. It has good guys you like and bad guys you hate, including White Tiger, a ferocious villain who lives to kill, and Huang Fei Hong, an embodiment of all the virtues of the martial arts. While fight scenes dominate the movie the characters are presented and developed so that the audience gets to know them sufficiently to care about what happens to them. The only major sub-plot are dealt with using kung fu movie shorthand—Tam King want to defeat Haung’s school in the lion dance competition and claim primacy in the martial arts world, at least in this corner of China. The main action, which involves the maniacal hatred that White Tiger has for Mousy is motivated almost by chance—the bells that Mousy wears remind White Tiger of the same type of bell that his pregnant and very deadly wife wore on her wrist. That’s all it takes to get thing in motion—the happen-stance of a family charm that reminds White Tiger of his dead wife and a kungfu school run by a bad guy who want to defeat the school run by the good guy.

Map of the Human Heart (1993)

Synopsis:
Map of the Human Heart is the title of a 1993 film by New Zealand director Vincent Ward. It was screened out of competition at the 1992 Cannes Film Festival. The film, set mostly before and during World War II, centers on the life of a Canadian Inuit boy, Avik (played as a child by Robert Joamie, and as an adult by Jason Scott Lee), who joins the Royal Canadian Air Force and eventually, as a crewmember of a Lancaster bomber, participates in the notorious firebombing of Dresden. Throughout his life, Avik is haunted by love for a Métis girl, Albertine (played by Anne Parillaud).
The film also stars Patrick Bergin, who plays a pivotal role as both surrogate father to Avik and his primary rival in Albertine's love. Jeanne Moreau has a minor role as a Québécois nun. John Cusack also has a small but important role as the mapmaker to whom Avik relates his incredible tale.
The film's re-creation of the firebombing of Dresden is one of the most graphic and powerful sequences in the film. On the day Ward finished shooting these scenes, he received word that his father, who had actually participated in the historical firebombing of Dresden, had died. This is why Ward chose to dedicate the film to him.
The scenes in "Nunatuk," the region of Northern Canada where Avik's people are from, were filmed on location in what is now Nunavut, using local Inuit as extras.

Bad Medicine : The Human Cost of Animal Experiments ()

Synopsis:
Bad Medicine is the first UK produced film exposing the true human cost of animal experimentation. Although many people believe that vivisection is a 'necessary evil', essential to the well-being of themselves and their loved ones, the reverse is actually the case; that basing human medicine on the false methodology of animal experimentation is a major cause of untold human suffering and death.

This is the film that the BBC would show you if it were not bed-fellows with the vivisection industry itself, and this film was made in order to go some way to redressing the torrent of pro-vivisection propaganda which has poured forth from the vivisection syndicate and the industry-beholden media - the BBC in particular - over the past several decades Though to informed people this situation is understandable, a much more worrying fact is that this is the sort of film that should have been made, and widely distributed, many years ago by the wealthy 'anti-vivisection' organisations in the UK, but has instead been left to a small, under-funded group. This speaks volumes.
