Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006)

About:
It is not a date film and the writers Karan Johar, Shibani Bathija spell it out at the very outset. The screenplay balances the two extremes - light moments and dollops of emotions with amazing ease. The relationship between the couples or even those between the parent and child (the Bachchans) is delicately handled. If there are moments that move you to tears, there are ample moments that bring a smile to your face as well.
Another noteworthy aspect is its forthright dialogues (Niranjan Iyengar). The lines sound straight of life and there also exist a host of interesting observations. Yes, the film is talky, but in a smart way. You never feel that the characters are talking to hear their own words or to fill up screen time.Anil Mehta's cinematography is awesome.Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's music is melodious. 'Mitwa', 'Rock N Roll Soniye' and 'Where's The Party Tonite' appeal also due to the vibrant choreography (Farah Khan). On the whole, it is an outstanding film from the writing, performance and execution point of view. There are three kinds of married people in the world.
First, whose marriages are arranged, they surely they know what they're doing. This movie is one such story that accounts how 4 lives change forever when 2 couplles cross each other. A grand saga of emotions, Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna is a highlight of the most elementary and beautiful emotion of human life- Love.

But he is unable to keep their presence secret, and Javed Khan and his men storm into his home, and take the three women to Javed's house. Alok is fond of music and does enroll in classes run by Pandit Jamuna Prasad. On his return, his father asks him to accompany Ashok to their law firm and start learning to practice, which he agrees to do. Then one day Triloki finds out that Alok has not been at the firm but is instead spending time in the local slums with a former courtesan named Sarju Bai Banaraswali. He cautions Alok about this, but Alok continues to visit Sarju Bai. When Mr. Gupta approaches Triloki about taking possession & demolishing the slum area, Triloki readily agrees and with his expertise manages to sway the Court's decision in Gupta's favor. As a result, Sarju Bai and others are rendered homeless. With the fee he receives from Gupta, he asks Alok to purchase a used car for himself. But Alok purchases a horse-carriage and decides to drive it himself to make a living. His enraged father asks him to leave the house. When Triloki finds out that Alok is doing well in his work, he decides to hire motor coaches to transport people at a much cheaper price, thus cutting off Alok's earnings and perhaps forcing him to reconsider his decision, apologize, and return home to his father. The question remains, will these actions force Alok to return home, or will the misunderstandings between father and son continue indefinitely.

Synopsis:
A fractal is "a rough or fragmented geometric shape that can be split into parts, each of which is (at least approximately) a reduced-size copy of the whole," a property called self-similarity.

Fractals: they're famously found in nature and artists have created some incredible renderings as well. Fractals are purely a wonder -- too irregular for Euclidean geometry; iterative and recursive and seemingly infinite. They turn up in food and germs, plants and animals, mountains and water and sky.

Winner of the 1993 National Association of Black Journalists Award

From the University of Tuskegee website:

"For forty years between 1932 and 1972, the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) conducted an experiment on 399 black men in the late stages of syphilis. These men, for the most part illiterate sharecroppers from one of the poorest counties in Alabama, were never told what disease they were suffering from or of its seriousness. Informed that they were being treated for "bad blood," their doctors had no intention of curing them of syphilis at all. The data for the experiment was to be collected from autopsies of the men, and they were thus deliberately left to degenerate under the ravages of tertiary syphilis—which can include tumors, heart disease, paralysis, blindness, insanity, and death. "As I see it," one of the doctors involved explained, "we have no further interest in these patients until they die."This program, hosted by CBS News correspondent Richard Schlesinger, includes an interview with one of the last surviving participants, Herman Shaw; explains the role of Nurse Rivers; and presents the medical establishment's justification for disguising racism as legitimate medical research."

A nearly extinct relic, The Deadly Deception was once a documentary screened in high schools throughout the US. It may be still, although its net presence is not consistent with that of an important educational film.

Chernobyl: 25 years later ()

About: A movie about the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant catastrophe 25 years later...

The truth after 20 years in Chernobyl ()

Seconds From Disaster: Meltdown In Chernobyl ()

Synopsis:
The Chernobyl disaster was a well-known nuclear accident of catastrophic proportions that occurred on 26 April 1986, at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine (then in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, part of the Soviet Union). It is considered the worst nuclear power plant accident in history and is the only level 7 event on the International Nuclear Event Scale.

The disaster occurred on 26 April 1986, 1:23 A.M., at reactor number four at the Chernobyl plant, near the town of Pripyat, during an unauthorized systems test. A sudden power output surge took place, and when an attempt was made at an emergency shutdown, a more extreme spike in power output occurred which led to the rupture of a reactor vessel as well as a series of explosions. This event exposed the graphite moderator components of the reactor to air and they ignited; the resulting fire sent a plume of radioactive fallout into the atmosphere and over an extensive area, including Pripyat. The plume drifted over large parts of the western Soviet Union, and much of Europe. As of December 2000, 350,400 people had been evacuated and resettled from the most severely contaminated areas of Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine. According to official post-Soviet data, up to 70% of the fallout landed in Belarus.

Back to Chernobyl ()

Synopsis:
A document about how it all happened, where the mistakes took place. etc. etc.

Lightning! (1995)

Synopsis:
Lightning! takes you on a high-voltage trip into the most electrically charged weather in the world—culminating in a dazzling lightning show set to music that rivals the most extraordinary fireworks display. The program also visits with some of lightning's tragic victims who thought they were out of harm's way.

Lightning's fleeting rivers of electricity strike Earth 6,000 times a minute; jolt every commercial airplane one to two times a year; wipe out power to entire cities; hit 1,000 people annually; and account on average for more deaths than hurricanes and tornadoes put together.

Join the scientists as they tempt nature by creating the world's tallest lightning rod, a wire leading thousands of feet into storm clouds, which triggers awe-inspiring thunderbolts a few hundred feet from the observers—and creates a chunk of "petrified" lightning. "I think lightning fascinates everyone," says "stormchaser" Dan Davis. "It's a personification of the intensity, the chaos and the unpredictability of nature."

The Awakening ()

Synopsis:
An independently produced documentary from Max Igan, covering controversial topics and important issues facing humanity. Max Igan (Pen Name) is an Australian researcher/ activist/ author.

From the Author Max Igan:
In this film I have attempted to explain to you, the real structure of this reality, the nature of energy and of the light and sound that make up this entire universe and everyone and everything contained within it. I have attempted to show you that this understanding is supported both by ancient traditions and also by modern science.

I will say to you again now that all that actually exists within this or any other reality is pure conscious energy. That is truly all there is and the stuff this energy is made from is pure unconditional love.

I bring this message to you now because it is important that you receive it. The Earth and all that live upon it are about to undergo some very significant changes but these changes are nothing to be feared for once you have gained a clear understanding of what this reality truly is; once you have gained knowledge of how the true stuff of the universe actually works; Once you have realized your connection to all people and to all things and follow the path of the one universal law, then what is there to fear? What is there to hate? What is there to judge?

Understand that the life we are experiencing within this reality is a game of free will being played out by a single consciousness of which we are all merely frequencies.

Tune into that space behind your eyes.

Realize that to make it through the coming changes, all you really need do is to move into your heart; to realize that all that actually exists within this reality is energy consisting of nothing more than pure and unconditional love. Embrace it, become it, for it is what you are made of.

When Will Time End? ()

Synopsis:
It now seems that our entire universe is living on borrowed time. How long it can survive depends on whether Stephen Hawking's theory checks out. Special thanks to Ivan Bridgewater for use of footage.

Time is flying by on this busy, crowded planet... as life changes and evolves from second to second.

And yet the arc of human lifespan is getting longer: 65 years is the global average ... way up from just 20 in the Stone Age.

Modern science, however, provides a humbling perspective. Our lives... indeed the life span of the human species... is just a blip compared to the age of the universe, at 13.7 billion years and counting.

It now seems that our entire universe is living on borrowed time...

And that even it may be just a blip within the grand sweep of deep time.

Scholars debate whether time is a property of the universe... or a human invention.

What's certain is that we use the ticking of all kinds of clocks... from the decay of radioactive elements to the oscillation of light beams... to chart and measure a changing universe... to understand how it works and what drives it.

Our own major reference for the passage of time is the 24-hour day... the time it takes the Earth to rotate once. Well, it's actually 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4.1 seconds... approximately... if you're judging by the stars, not the sun.

Earth acquired its spin during its birth, from the bombardment of rocks and dust that formed it.

But it's gradually losing that rotation to drag from the moon's gravity.

That's why, in the time of the dinosaurs, a year was 370 days... and why we have to add a leap second to our clocks about every 18 months.

In a few hundred million years, we'll gain a whole hour.

The day-night cycle is so reliable that it has come to regulate our internal chemistry.

The fading rays of the sun, picked up by the retinas in our eyes, set our so-called "circadian rhythms" in motion.

That's when our brains begin to secrete melatonin, a hormone that tells our bodies to get ready for sleep. Long ago, this may have been an adaptation to keep us quiet and clear of night-time predators.

Finally, in the light of morning, the flow of melatonin stops. Our blood pressure spikes... body temperature and heart rate rise as we move out into the world.

Over the days ... and years... we march to the beat of our biology.

But with our minds, we have learned to follow time's trail out to longer and longer intervals.

Philosophers have wondered... does time move like an arrow... with all the phenomena in nature pushing toward an inevitable end?

Or perhaps, it moves in cycles that endlessly repeat... and even perhaps restore what is there?

We know from precise measurements that the Earth goes around the sun once every 365.256366 days.

As the Earth orbits, with each hemisphere tilting toward and away from its parent star, the seasons bring on cycles of life... birth and reproduction... decay and death.

Only about one billionth of the Sun's energy actually hits the Earth. And much of that gets absorbed by dust and water vapor in the upper atmosphere.

What does make it down to the surface sets many planetary processes in motion.

You can see it in the annual melting and refreezing of ice at the poles... the ebb and flow of heat in the tropical oceans...

The seasonal cycles of chlorophyll production in plants on land and at sea... and in the biosphere at large.

These cycles are embedded in still longer Earth cycles.

Ocean currents, for example, are thought to make complete cycles ranging from four to around sixteen centuries.

Moving out in time, as the Earth rotates on its axis, it completes a series of interlocking wobbles called Milankovic cycles every 23 to 41,000 years.

They have been blamed for the onset of ice ages about every one hundred thousand years.

Then there's the carbon cycle. It begins with rainfall over the oceans and coastal waves that pull carbon dioxide into the sea.

Sardari Begum (1996)

About:
This is the second movie of the shyam benegal's trilogy of Khalid Mohammed's stories (the others are Mammo and Zubeida). This is probably the best of the trilogy which talks about independent muslim women who went after what they wanted in life. For sardari it was the love of music, the wish to become a great singer.
In "Sardari Begum" the views of people she meets are very biased. Even though she was a good hearted person, everyone talks low of her because of her social status as some one who sings in mehfils. The story slowly develops with different inputs and there are overlaps to show how different people manipulate the narration to suit their viewpoints.

One of the good things about the movie is its music. The movie has lots of thumri songs. Two of them are sung by Asha Bhonsle, one by Shubha Joshi and rest of them by Aarti Angalikar.

Synopsis:
Tehzeeb first comes to know about sardari from her father. who talks ill off her, more off a prostitute than a singer just cause sardari lived the life the way she wanted to live. The story which starts as a curiosity to know the life of sardari ends with a bigger picture of the state of woman in our society.Even though sardari is seen low by the society , end of the day all that she has done is shun the role the society offers. To be a sacrificing mother or a good wife and leads her own life as an independent woman.

The movie is multi layered, not only does it tell the story of the thumri singer, it also parallely narrates the story of two other woman, tehzeeb and sardari's daughter and how at the end sardari's life influences them to take decisions on their life.
