Import Export (2007)
Synopsis:
Import/Export tells two stories that at first glance appear unrelated. One is an import story, beginning in the Ukraine and leading to Austria. The other is an export story, in which the trajectory is reversed. The first concerns Olga, a young nurse and mother who, determined to leave the Ukraine, decides to go to Austria, where she eventually finds work as a cleaning lady in a geriatric hospital. The other story follows Paul, a young Austrian man who finds himself unemployed and in debt, until his stepfather takes him along to a job in the Ukraine installing video gambling machines. This is an Austrian film by the director Ulrich Seidl from 2007, which won the Grand Prix – Golden Apricot reward in Yerevan International Film Festival.
Consensus: A grim and disturbing vision from Ulrich Seidl, makes for an uncomfortable and uncompromising picture of life, that is anything but comfy and pedestrian.

The War on Democracy ()
Synopsis:
Award winning journalist John Pilger examines the role of Washington in America's manipulation of Latin American politics during the last 50 years leading up to the struggle by ordinary people to free themselves from poverty and racism. Since the mid 19th Century Latin America has been the 'backyard' of the US, a collection of mostly vassal states whose compliant and often brutal regimes have reinforced the 'invisibility' of their majority peoples. The film reveals similar CIA policies to be continuing in Iraq, Iran and Lebanon. The rise of Venezuela's Hugo Chavez despite ongoing Washington backed efforts to unseat him in spite of his overwhelming mass popularity, is democratic in a way that we have forgotten or abandoned in the west. True Democracy being a solid 80% voter turnout in support of Chavez in over 6 elections.

Teorema (1968)
Watch
Synopsis:
A stranger visits with a wealthy family. He seduces the maid, the son, the mother, the daughter and finally the father before leaving a few days later... After he's gone, none of them can continue living as they did. Who was that visitor ? Could he be God ?
When it was released,"Teorema" caused a scandal (but not as huge as "Salo" seven years later). However, it won the Catholic Office of Cinema prize...How come? Maybe because sex is these people's road to Damascus. The Angel, played by Terence Stamp, might one of the two messengers who came to Sodom in order to warn Lot. Some claimed that Pasolini wanted to reconcile Christians and Marxists: it is not impossible, considering the father's (Massimo Girotti) attitude who divests himself of all that he possesses. But as for the other characters, I do not think that the proof is really convincing. Finally, Pasolini is more talented when he tackles myths and religions ("Gospel according to St Matthews","Medea","Oedipe Re") and those flicks tell us more about our "modern" behaviors than something as far-fetched as "Teorema"...Was the above review useful to you?
[TRIVIA:] Final part of Pier Paolo Pasolini's "Mythical Cyce" also including Oedipus Rex (1967), Teorema (1968) and Pigpen (1969).

Salò (1975)
AKA:
Salo
The 120 Days Of Sodom
Die 120 Tage von Sodom >> German
Salò o le 120 giornate di Sodoma >> Original Italian
Synopsis:
Set in the Nazi-controlled, northern Italian state of Salo in 1944, four dignitaries round up sixteen perfect specimens of youth and take them together with guards, servants and studs to a palace near Marzabotto. In addition, there are four middle-aged women: three of whom recount arousing stories whilst the fourth accompanies on the piano. The story is largely taken up with their recounting the stories of Dante and De Sade: the Circle of Manias, the Circle of Shit and the Circle of Blood. Following this, the youths are executed whilst each libertine takes his turn as voyeur.
Salo or the 120 Days of Sodom (Salo o le 120 giornate di Sodoma), commonly referred to as Salo, is a controversial 1975 Italian film written and directed by Italian director Pier Paolo Pasolini with uncredited writing contributions by Pupi Avati. It is based on the book The 120 Days of Sodom by the Marquis de Sade.
The movie was extremely controversial upon its release, and remains banned in several countries to this day, because of its graphic portrayals of rape, torture and murder — mainly of people thought to be younger than eighteen years of age.
It was Pasolini's last film; he was murdered shortly before Salo was released.
The film focuses on four wealthy, corrupted fascist libertines in 1944 Mussolini's Italy who kidnap a total of eighteen teenage boys and girls and subject them to four months of extreme violence, sadism, sexual and mental torture before finally executing them one by one.
Although it remains a controversial film to this day, it has been praised by various film historians and critics.
A large group of artists, including Martin Scorsese and Alec Baldwin, and scholars signed a legal brief arguing the film's artistic merit; the case was dismissed on a technicality.
Starring:
Edwige Fenech
Valerio Fioravanti
Enrico Simonetti
Director: Marino Girolami

Sappho (2008)
Synopsis:
The film "Sappho - Love without limits" is a provocative, passionate and enthralling love story, set on a Greek island of Lesbos in the 1920’s. The movie is centered on a modern love triangle between a newly-wed American couple, Sappho and Phil, and the daughter of a Russian émigré archaeologist, Helene.
This love triangle repeats the central situation of the ancient Greek poetess Sappho's most famous lyric of thwarted sexual desire. As our three lovers live out a complex and scandalous ménage a trios, the present and the past seem to merge together, leading our modern Sappho to an act which repeats the passionate death of the ancient poetess.
As our three lovers live out a complex girl-boy-girl sexual triangle, Sappho also comes to believe that she is the reincarnation of the ancient poetess Sappho - that Sappho who first put the "lesbian" in Lesbos. However, our modern Sappho does realize how the ancient Sappho's legend ends... Inspired by the poems of Sappho
"Sappho. Love without limits" was filmed in the Crimea by "Yalta-Film", the new Ukrainian film studio. Sappho’s stars are a trio of talented young actors, Avalon Barrie, Todd Soley and Lyudmila Shiryaeva, and the movie also features Bogdan Stupka and several Greek actors in secondary roles. The music is by Maro Theodorakis and world-famous Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis ("Zorba the Greek", "Serpico", "Z"), and the superb photography is by Baghir Rafiyev.
Starring:
Avalon Barrie - Sappho
Todd Soley - Phil
Laurel Shaffer - Helene

Combining live-action footage shot in Mongolia with CGI software used in Lord of the Rings, the recreation of battle scenes is taken to a new level in presenting the story of how Genghis conquered an empire greater than the Roman Empire at its peak.

Raul doesn't want his brother's heart broken by a call girl, so he goes to the brothel to persuade Milena to put an end to their relationship. Synopsis:
A violent man discovers his mentally challenged brother is his rival for the affections of a beautiful but troubled woman in this drama from filmmaker Vicente Aranda. Raul (Eduardo Noriega) is an angry, loose cannon of a cop who has lost his job after roughing up one too many suspects and receiving death threats from a number of violent and dangerous criminals. With few prospects, Raul heads back to the north of Spain where he grew up and moves in with his father Jose (Hector Colome). One of Raul's few soft spots is for his twin brother Valentin (also played by Eduardo Noriega), who is mentally handicapped, so he becomes deeply concerned when Jose tells him Valentin has been working as a gofer at a local bordello and has fallen in love with one the prostitutes, Milena (Flora Martinez). Raul doesn't want his brother's heart broken by a call girl, so he goes to the brothel to persuade Milena to put an end to their relationship. But Raul finds himself falling for the drug-addicted Milena himself, and he attempts to drive a wedge between her and Valentin in a direct and ugly manner. Canciones de Amor en Lolita's Club (aka Love Songs In Lolita's Club) was adapted from a novel by Juan Marse.
