Love for Share (2006)

Synopsis:
Three women from different backgrounds wrestle with the soul-crushing binds of polygamy in "Love for Share," a frank treatment of a normally taboo subject that's strong on heartfelt sympathy but weak on construction. Helmer Nia Dinata, whose "Arisan!" featured the first Indonesian onscreen gay kiss, doesn't shy from difficult topics, but here her script cries out for greater focus and a firmer hold on development. Pic's future won't extend beyond scattered fest dates.

While each story is self-contained, characters intersect in small ways. Weakest segment is the first: On discovering her husband's ever-increasing harem, ob/gyn Salma (Jajang C. Noer) struggles to reconcile her role as obedient Muslim wife with her sense of betrayal. In a crowded slum, Siti (Shanty) chafes as her uncle's third bride, redefining her sense of individuality in the arms of fellow wife Dwi (Rieke Diah Pitaloka). Flirtatious Ming (Dominique) tries to use a secret marriage to the boss for her own ends, but wife number one isn't feeling generous. Second segment was shot in Super 16, giving the grittier atmosphere a much-needed air of reality especially lacking in part one. Shifts in story-lines are clumsily handled.

She was a naturist herself until the age of 12, when her self-consciousness, a negative image of her own body, and a lack of other teenagers interested in nudism, led her to cover up. She's been what other naturists call a 'textile' ever since.
But recently, she discovered, via the internet, that there is a new generation of teenage nudists. As well as looking into the motivation of nudists, Bianca investigates whether the whole movement is as universally innocent and non-sexual as practitioners claim.
From meeting closet nudists who only take their clothes off alone, and witnessing a naked bike ride through central London, to an extraordinary and liberating nudist camp in America, this is Bianca's open, honest, affectionate and sometimes critical look at what it is to be a naturist.

Gangaajal ()

Synopsis:
Yes India is poor and officials are mostly corrupt, but there are several great people who work under extreme hardships to dispense their duty, and fight for truth and justice. The bhagalpur blindings are very controversial. Some human rights chaps had genuine concerns about balancing punishment and human rights, but there are several sleezy Arundhati Roy types who needlessly vilified some brave police officers who had the take extreme steps to bring crime under control. I am not an expert on the facts of the case and will not comment whether the movie represnts reality. I will comment on the movie on the assumption that it is based on facts. Does an honest police officer have a choice given such dire circumstances. But doesnt meting out brutal punishment a slippery slope? Interesting questions. I loved the movie because I am a huge Ajay Devgan fan.

Being raised in India amidst corruption, brutality, squalor I have seen how ordinary folks ( like the police office of this movie) make huge ethical decisions every minute - people tell small lies to save the big truth. When I sit in MBA classes in the US and listen inane fetid professors lecture on corporate ethics etc, it makes me laugh and cry at the same time.

Some people in the US ( and of course in other parts of the world) have made a living out of crying about genuine or alleged violation of rights. There are of course several great genuine human rights activists who who balanced views and do recognize the severe.

She's On Duty (2005)

Synopsis:
Take Stephen Chow's Fight Back to School, reset it in an all-girl's school in South Korea, and add a plucky female protagonist, and you'll have some idea of what writer/director Park Kwang Choon (Madeleine) has in store for you in his entertaining action comedy, She's On Duty! After bungling an important sting operation involving a Yakuza-run sex slavery ring, Detective Chun Jae In (Kim Seon A, from S Diary and Wet Dreams) must make amends by going deep undercover as a high school student! Her mission is to make friends with Seung Hee (Nam Sang Mi, from (Too Beautiful to Lie), the daughter of Cha Young Jae (Kim Kap Soo), a reformed crook who holds the key to prosecuting a notorious mob boss, but who is impossible to track down. With constant exams, school bullies, and a budding crush on a handsome, but mysterious high schooler (Gong Yoo, from My Tutor Friend), to deal with, can Jae-In find Mr. Cha before the mob does?

Kim Seon A shines as Jae-In, giving a performance that has earned raves from nostalgic audiences longing to relive the "good ol' days" of high school. While the film seems like a light farce, things turn serious towards story's end as Jae-In takes charge to prove her worth as a police officer. And although the plot may sound like a Korean hybrid of American films like Never Been Kissed and Miss Congeniality, She's On Duty is one film that stands out on its own and goes straight to the head of the class!

Road Movie (2002)

Synopsis:
Dae-Shik is a gay homeless man on the streets of Soel. He finds a suicidal ex-financier Suk-Won on the street. Suk-Won's business has failed and his wife has thrown him out. The two hit the road together to find work, but instead find Il-Joo , a prostitute. Il-Joo is attracted to Dae-Shik. Dae-Shik is attracted to Suk-Won. And Suk-Won is not gay. When he turns to Il-Joo for comfort, the triangle is complete.

Even though it is likely to ignite controversy among Korean filmgoers for its explicit depiction of gay sexuality, Road Movie is simply an excellent film, with or without sex scenes: a taut and poignant drama capable of holding its own against its cinematic predecessors such as Wim Wenders' Paris Texas and Gus Van Sant's My Own Private Idaho. To be sure, in Road Movie, same-sex love between men is not used as a narrative device to enhance melodramatics, as it is in, say, Bungee Jumping of Their Own: the characters approach this issue with refreshing candidness and pragmatism, and the movie braves the uncharted waters of the human heart where the currents of friendship, compassion, love and sexual desire co-mingle and merge into one another.

There, Aladar and his family meet other dinosaurs for the first time as well as real dangers. The destruction caused by the meteor here has also forced a herd of different herbivores to move to a remote valley that can provide food and protection against the carnivorous predators following after. Together, they must stand strong amid food and water shortages, the threat of attacks by carnotaurs, and Aladar's run-ins with the herd's stubborn leader, Kron. At first the parents are reluctant to do so but eventually they are persuaded by the lawyer that filing a class action lawsuit would ease their minds and also be the right thing to do...."The Sweet Hereafter" was arguably the best film of the 1990s. But dont worry Im not going to start screaming "If you dont like this movie you just dont understand it! Go back to your Hollywood pablum you cretinous moron!" Thats a stupid argument in any case and especially so here. There are going to be some people -- including a few art-house fans -- who will find this movie slow and tedious. For me and many others however the film is a masterpiece.

Cobra (1986)

Synopsis:
Cobretti the cop, a fearless dispenser of justice out to stop a gang of serial killers. This is a classic Sylvester Stallone action movie. It's one of the best he ever made. Cobra was mostly known for the number of people killed during the movie. It far exceeded any previous record for an action movie...bordering on the comical. Some of the things you'll remember... The match he keeps in his mouth. His awesome gun. His Mercury which is painfully destroyed during the movie. And the most memorable moment is when he meets up with "Night Slasher" (Brian Thompson) at the end and gets an earful about the judicial system. "They'll say I'm insane. Won't they...PIG!?" If ever there was a classic piece of film it's this encounter. Me and my friends still joke today about how spittle and sweat comes from his mouth when he says, "PIG!". It's hilarious. That alone is worth owning this movie. In all, it's typical of 80's action films. Sylvester's films always seem to have a fair amount of cheese in them. It's a given. At the same time tho, they don't make films like this anymore. The days.
