Synopsis:
When the police are called to investigate the death of a woman killed by a stone thrown by an agitated mob, an intriguing life story is unraveled. The woman killed is known in the community as Sardari Begum, a popular singer and courtesan in her time. The religious nature of the incident and impending elections combine to attract the media's attention. Covering the funeral is a young reporter who discovers her father among the mourners, promptong her to investigate further. Focusing on the complex portrait of family relationships, generational and sexual politics, as well as social etiquette in India, Kiron Kher's superb portrayal of a dynamic woman who breaks the shackles of society and achieves excellence in her chosen profession won her the National Award.
