Sant Tukaram (1936)

Synopsis:
This classic film chronicles the life of Tukaram (17th century), one of Maharashtra's most popular saint poets. Tukaram sang the praises of the Lord Pandurang; he sang it in the form of abhangs which express his feelings and philosophical outlook. His abhangs became very popular with the common people. It was this very popularity that caused the high caste Brahmans to hate and persecute Tukaram; as he was causing them to lose their power over the people. His religious poetry constituted the first major movement against caste domination. This film chronicles the life of the great saint, his family and the devious plots of the high caste Brahmans calling for his ostracization.
