Synopsis:
Established in 1954, the KGB was the foreign intelligence and domestic
security arm of the Soviet Union. With nearly half a million personnel
and millions of secret informants, the agency often used brutal tactics
that instilled fear among citizens and effectively destroyed dissent
within the USSR. During the Soviet era, the KGB's responsibilities also
included the protection of the country's political leadership, the
supervision of border troops and the general surveillance of the
population.
