The Sleeping Dictionary (2003)

Synopsis:
John Truscott goes to Borneo to work with the Iban. He reports to Henry Bullard, who gives him a "sleeping dictionary"--one of the locals who teaches him the local language and culture. And who he gives John is Selima. And while teaching him, John finds himself attracted to her. And we says it's not allowed, both the locals and Bullard forbid him to be in a relationship with Selima. But he defies them which has dire consequences.

Waaris (1988)

Synopsis:
Multi-millionaire widower Kishan Singh prepare a will which states that his ancestral property is equally divided among his two sons, Gajjan and Dulla while the son of Gajjan, Shravan shall inherit the farm land. Enraged at not willing anything to his three sons, Thade, Dara and Chhote, Dulla confronts his father which leads to an argument leading to violence and Kishan is killed in the process. Dulla is then apprehended by the police and is jailed leaving his sons to be raised by Gajjan. Years later Shravan meets with a poor young woman, Paramjit alias Paro and both fall in love leading to marriage. Eventually Dulla's sentenced gets completed and he joins the family once again; shortly after he schemes with goons and have Shravan killed. With no one to claim their rights on Shravan's land this leaves the way clear for Dulla and his three sons to take control of this land but Paro will not permit this to happen and the only way she can prevent this is by giving birth to a heir so she confronts Gajjan to re-marry her younger sister, Shibo but there is a short-coming involved as Shibo is in love with a young man, Bhinder and wants to marry only him.

Synopsis:

Synopsis:
Samir Niyogi lives in India and is assigned by the Government to travel to Rajasthan, evaluate a princely castle that once belonged to Raja Param Singh, take stock of all items, the condition of the building, and report back to the Government. Enroute to his destination by train, he permits a woman to enter his compartment, goes to sleep, and when he awakens finds her gone. A few days later, when he goes to the castle, he finds the very same woman cooking within the premises. When both enter the castle, he finds himself back in time and witnesses a scene that happened eons ago. When he recovers, he finds himself alone, and locked in. He breaks out and narrates this incident to his friend and local Collector, Shafi and his wife, Sharda. He does meet the woman again in the dead of night, and after showing him the way, she disappears. Then Sharda asks Samir to wear a amulet at all times as it will protect from evil spirits. He does meet the woman again, this time in the middle of the desert, and is not heard of for two days. When Shafi orders the castle to be searched, a dungeon in particular, is where they find Samir in a state of near-death. How did Samir end up in a dungeon that has been sealed for hundreds of years, and what exactly is the mystery behind the woman, who Samir now calls Rewa?

Synopsis:
Mumbai-based Rahul accompanies his friend, Amar Singh, to a village called Bhedia in order to attend the marriage of Supriya, the latter's sister. While on the way there, he sees a young woman and instantly falls in love with her despite of being told that she is destined to be a prostitute according to the tradition prevailing in this community where local police actually procure young women for wealthy Zamindars/landlords. Unable to get her out of his mind, he approaches a pimp, Manghi, and through him finds out her name is Bela, who lives with her mother, Paro, and father, Mangatram. His overtures to get married to her will be met with strong opposition from her parents who are all set to sell her to the highest bidder. Rahul, however, meets Bela on the sly and both fall in love. The community finds out, they feel threatened as all males are dependent on the flesh trade, and hold a special Panchayat Meeting. After a short discussion the Mukhiya finds the couple guilty, instructs.

Synopsis:

Rani (Tannishtha Chatterjee), who has been a widow for half of her life, is trying with all her might to get her son, Gulab (Riddhi Sen), married to a beautiful girl, Janki (Lehar Khan), from the neighboring village. Then there is Lajjo (Radhika Apte), a friend of Rani. They both are skilled and work for a local entrepreneur named Kishan (Sumeet Vyas). Lajjo is childless and wants to conceive desperately but fails. On top of this, her alcoholic husband, Manoj, batters her every night. The fourth woman is Bijli (Surveen Chawla), a local erotic dancer, who is a feast for the eyes of village men. She not just dances but fulfils inner desires of many men during dry, sensuous nights of the village. The men of village fear the development and skill of the women and want to live the lifestyle left by their forefathers. The entwined story of these four women shows how they live in a tightly controlled world, hemmed in by tradition, but in their private spaces, they talk about love, sex, and their dreams for the future. The twist to the story comes when Rani discovers Janki is dishonored in her village, Lajjo is tired of the brutality of her husband, and Bijli is jealous of a new girl who might replace her. This leads to a journey of freedom and finding solace in each other together.
