Anatomy of a Massacre - Cambodia (2012)

Synopsis:
The UN estimates 3000 were killed in the Khmer Rouge Po Chrey massacre. But journalist Thet Sambath tracked down several perpetrators for the first time and discovered the truth is much more alarming.

"I created a relaxed atmosphere so they didn't suspect what was about to happen", describes one ex-Khmer Rouge soldier. "I saw my uncle in the group. I was scared I would be implicated and die alongside him, so I avoided his glance". Award-winning journalist and genocide survivor, Thet Sambath, is known worldwide for obtaining Khmer Rouge confessions on camera. The evidence he gathered for this report suggests the massacre at Po Chrey may have been the greatest single day atrocity since World War Two, exceeding even Srebrenica. The blank stares and half-smiles of the soldiers jar disturbingly with the horrors they are calmly confessing to. Revisiting a pond that was once over-flowing with bodies, perpetrator In Thoen recalls, "scalps were flying, shredded by bullets. The stench of blood was too strong so I stood upwind". A local farmer remembers how as a young boy he played with the severed heads of his neighbours. Putting these accounts to Nuon Chea, Brother Number 2, he shrugs. "I don't deny it happened. But I didn't know at the time".

The Medan Connection - Indonesia (2011)

Synopsis:
The grisly truth behind fashion's reptile skin trade

This shocking report has already been forcing change at the highest levels of Swiss politics. Travelling to Indonesia, it reveals the brutal roots of the world's luxury reptile skin industry.

"Move over leopard, the star animal print this year is snake!" For the image-conscious elite, snake skin handbags come at a price, but not with a conscience. Tracing the supply chain back to its violent origins, it appears even protected reptiles are not safe. In the rudimentary slaughterhouses instant death is not guaranteed and often the snakes are skinned alive. Laws exist to prevent this, but they are easily circumvented. With illegal snake skin supplying the major fashion houses the industry has a lot of power, which the UN regulating body has failed to control. "Overall the policy makers involved in this trade must accept that there are a range of major problems".

With one ship (the Farley Mowat) too slow to chase down the whaling fleet, with their second ship (the Robert Hunter) unsuited for Antarctic ice conditions and with no country supporting their efforts to enforce international law, the situation becomes increasingly desperate. Ebola - Most terrifying and deadliest virus ever ()

Synopsis:
Ebola virus disease (EVD) or Ebola hemorrhagic fever (EHF) is the human disease which may be caused by any of four of the five known ebola viruses. These four viruses are: Bundibugyo virus (BDBV), Ebola virus (EBOV), Sudan virus (SUDV), and Taï Forest virus (TAFV, formerly and more commonly Côte d'Ivoire Ebola virus (Ivory Coast Ebolavirus, CIEBOV)). EVD is a viral hemorrhagic fever (VHF), and is clinically nearly indistinguishable from Marburg virus disease (MVD).
The name comes from Ebola River in Republic of the Congo, where it was first found.
This Documentary deals with a very crucial issue related to health and tries to inform people about the intensity of this problem. Ebola can easily be declared as the most terrifying virus ever as it has all tendencies to kill people. Its first outbreak was in 1995 in Zaire and killed almost 77 percent of people affected by it. Kikwit, the affected area, was separated from other parts of the village in order to limit the virus and protect other areas from its deadly impact. But what it did to the victims was very horrible and painful.

Let's have a look at the credentials of "Ebola -- Most Terrifying Virus Ever". It is directed by Ric Esther Bienstock with a script from Elliott Halpern and Simcha Jacobovici and acted out by William Close, Russell Coleman and Stacy keach with support from other actors as well. As far as production is concerned, there are some big names here also like Associated Producers Group Inc., Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) and Channel 4 Television Corporation.

The documentary contains clips of the people who lived with this virus until they died. And it shows all the steps that this virus took to end its host. Ebola broke down every system in their body slowly and dissolved all the internal organs and connective tissues thus, damaging the body completely without any hope of recovery. The makers of the film talk with the experts and discuss the nature and complexities of Ebola.

A very interesting and important part of the film is when experts talk about the future of this virus. And the news is not good at all, experts fear that another outbreak would be even more deadly and is going to affect more people. Kikwit was horrible but the next outbreak will be massive and unstoppable.

Pandemic ()

Synopsis:
A simple virus brewed in the belly of a dead bird is set to embark on a global killing spree. The likely culprit is H5N1 - a bird flu virus with the dangerous potential to mutate into the next pandemic flu virus.

In a feature-length special, we tell the story of what could happen if a flu pandemic hits. Experts predict the next pandemic will be more disruptive than any disease we've seen before. And they're particularly worried that it will be most deadly for the young and otherwise healthy.

The last flu pandemic in 1918 killed an estimated 50 million people worldwide. Nowadays, with extensive global travel and movement, the virus will be able to spread even more easily. The estimates are that hundreds of millions could be infected and potentially die.

Synopsis:

Tasogare Seibei ()

AKA:
The Twilight Samurai
たそがれ清兵衛

Synopsis:
Seibei Iguchi is a low-ranking samurai of the Unasaka clan in Shonai Province of northeast Japan. His wife died of tuberculosis, a frequent cause of demise in those early years of hunger and malnutrition. With two daughters, Kayano and Ito, and an aging mother to support, he and his family must survive in austerity. The moment his daily work is over, he hurries home, refusing to drink or eat with fellow samurai, and concentrates on housework and moonlighting. Behind his back, samurai teasingly call him "Tasogare Seibei (Twilight Seibei)."

One day Seibei meets Tomonojo Iinuma, a childhood friend, and hears about Tomoe, the latter's sister, whose dogmatic husband Toyotaro is such a lush that she divorced him and moved in with her brother. The next day, Tomoe visits Seibei and the two enjoy reminiscing. As Seibei walks Tomoe home they encounter her ex, furiously determined to take her back. As fate would have it, Seibei, instead of Tomonojo who is a poor fencer, must duel with Toyotaro. On the day of their fight, Seibei, with only a wooden sword, easily beats Toyotaro who uses a real sword. As rumors of the duel rapidly spread, Tomoe takes to frequently calling at Seibei's residence. Seibei's daughters Kayano and Ito grow attached to her, and Tomonojo suggests that Seibei marry the girl. However, fearing he is too poor, Seibei declines, which puts an end to Tomoe's visits.

Meanwhile, strife within the clan has continued over who will be its successor. After the matter is resolved, Seibei is ordered to kill a retainer named Zenemon Yogo, who disapproves of the new lord of the fief. Seibei opts to refuse, claiming he lacks the skill to perform the task. Told that the clan's orders are the same as the lord's, he reluctantly agrees. The next morning Seibei sends for Tomoe, describes his mission and asks her to help him prepare. During the tense period as they wait for the samurai coming for him, Seibei tells Tomoe that since his childhood, his dream has been to marry her. "I'm going to fight a duel," he vows. "I shall win and come back. If I then ask you to marry me, will you accept?" What Seibei does not know is that Tomoe has just made arrangements for an engagement.

Seibei heads to Yogo's residence, but to his surprise, he finds Yogo drunk. "Well, sorry for the trouble, but I am going to be on the run. The world is about to change, with totally different culture from the west coming in. The way of the samurai is now dead." The drunkard samurai was talkative. He starts his story of losing his wife of tuberculosis, and the absurdity of harakiri, which he did not believe in at all. Also losing his wife of tuberculosis, Seibei sympathizes with the samurai and tells his hardships. "I didn't even have money to give a funeral, and finally, ended up selling the life' of a samurai, my sword." With his words, he draws the sword out of its scabbard, which reveals itself as only a wooden sword. Seeing this, Yogo's makes a sudden attack to Seibei. Seibei makes a move, and Yogo's blade barely missing him. Seibei tries to talk Yogo out of the duel, but Yogo keeps on roaring, moving closer to Seibei, and makes his final attack...

It is in the evening twilight that Seibei returns home. Ito comes running out to welcome him. Seibei picks her up in his arms, and smiles. Then, a shadow moves from the house and Seibei stops. It is Tomoe, who just cannot stop her tears seeing Seibei's return.

...In a lonely grave in a hidden temple, is Ito, now old. The grave is Seibei and Tomoe's. The two married, but Seibei was killed right afterwards, in the Meiji Revolution war, with a gun. Still, he lived a happy life, surrounded by the people he loved, thought Ito.

Death Row - Philippines (2000)

Synopsis:
A man lies down to die. He is strapped to a bed and his left arm is punctured with a crude yet fatal drip.

He is not alone. Over 1300 prisoners in the Philippines are on death row, awaiting their lethal injection. Among them are women and even children. The rising number of executions is part of a crackdown on crime -- Zero Tolerance Filipino style. The man in charge of this campaign is Ping Lacson of the Philippines National Police. He was nick-named Dirty Harry when he broke a big gang of Manila bank robbers and took no prisoners. Instead eleven suspects were shot dead in suspicious circumstances. "I would rather be feared than loved ... as long as I get things done", he says. And he is getting things done. In his first six months petty crime is down 30 percent and drug arrests have doubled. While politicians score points, human rights activists and leaders of the Catholic Church call for an abolition of the death penalty.

Symphony of Horror - Nosferatu (1922)

AKA:
Nosferatu
Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens >> German

Synopsis:
Though diminished by decades of pop-horror incarnations, the vampire remains uniquely evocative of both dread and fascination, horror and seductiveness. Monsters from werewolves to Freddy Krueger may frighten, but neither victims nor audience are drawn to them. By contrast, the vampire suggests the horror of evil working on our disordered passions.

A pioneering film in the silent German expressionist movement, F. W. Murnau's Nosferatu (not to be confused with Werner Herzog's 1979 remake) is almost unique in imagining a vampire who is not darkly attractive, but corpselike and ghastly. Even so, his dread fascination remains troubling; the hero's wife seems repelled but also mesmerized even as she seeks to destroy him.

An unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula, Nosferatu made few concessions to copyright beyond name and place changes: Count Dracula became Count Orlock (Max Schreck), Jonathan Harker became Thomas Hutter (Gustav von Wangenheim), Mina Harker became Ellen Hutter (Greta Schröder), and scenes set in England were moved to Bremen, Germany (yet the vampire's arrival by sea is retained, illustrating just how superficial the changes are).

Perhaps unfortunately, Murnau's film all but eschews the traditional role of Christian iconography, of crucifixes and holy water, in vampire mythology, retaining only a few vestigial references (e.g., an allusion to the seven deadly sins). (Herzog's remake, which restores Stoker's original character names, also reincorporates Stoker's religious imagery.) However, it more than makes up for this with a major new contribution to vampire mythology: It was in this film that the vampire was first imagined to have a deathly vulnerability to sunlight.

Nosferatu, like Dracula, has been the subject of numerous Freudian and sociological interpretations: The vampire is sex; the vampire is the id or animal desire; the vampire is wantonness; the vampire is veneral disease.

As applied to Stoker's novel, at least some of these theories may be worth exploring; but Murnau's film fundamentally alters the equasion in ways that upends such interpretations.

First, it leaves Dracula's wives out of the story, eliminating the seductive scene in the book that leaves the protagonist Harker in a debilitated condition. Second and more importantly, it changes the rules about destroying vampires: Whereas Stoker's Dracula could be opening attacked with stakes and holy artifacts, Murnau's Orlock must be distracted till dawn by a pure virgin surrendering herself to his thirst, even at the cost of her life.

This is no simple metaphor for sex or animal appetite, for Orlock is too obviously evil, destructive, and moribund; yet in making surrender rather than resistance the means of destroying the monster, the film hardly evokes wantonness or veneral disease. The imagery resists allegorization, remaining simply, unsettlingly, itself.

Jack the Giant Slayer (2013)

Synopsis:
In the Kingdom of Cloister, Jack, a young farm boy, is fascinated by the legend of Erik, an ancient king who defeated an army of invading giants from a realm in the sky by controlling them with a magical crown. At the same time, Princess Isabelle becomes fascinated with the same legenda.

10 years later, Jack goes into town to sell his horse to support his uncle's farm. There, Jack spots Isabelle and develops a crush on her, after defending her honor from a group of thugs. Meanwhile, Lord Roderick returns to his study, only to find that a monk has robbed him. The monk offers Jack some magic beans he stole from Roderick as collateral for Jack's horse. Back at the castle, Isabelle quarrels with her father, King Brahmwell, as she wants to explore the kingdom, but he wants her to stay and marry Roderick. Likewise, Jack's uncle scolds him for being foolish before throwing the beans on the floor and leaving the house.

Determined to be free, Isabelle sneaks out of the castle and seeks shelter from the rain in Jack's house. As it rains, one of the beans takes root and grows into a massive beanstalk that carries the house and Isabelle into the sky as Jack falls to the ground.

Jack, Roderick, and Roderick's attendant, Wicke, volunteer to join the king's knights, led by Elmont and his second in-command, Crawe, and climb the beanstalk in search of Isabelle. As they climb, Roderick and Wicke cut the safety rope, intentionally killing some of the knights. At the top, they discover the giants' realm and decide to split into two groups; one with Jack, Elmont, and Crawe, and the other including Roderick and Wicke, but not before Roderick forcibly takes the remaining beans from Jack (although Jack manages to save one for himself).

Jack's group is trapped by a giant, who takes everyone prisoner except Jack. Meanwhile, Roderick's group encounters two other giants; one eats Wicke, but before they can do the same to Roderick, Roderick dons the magic crown.

Jack follows the giant to their stronghold, where the two-headed giant leader, Fallon, has killed Crawe. There, Jack finds the imprisoned Isabelle and Elmont. As the giants prepare to kill their remaining prisoners, Roderick walks in and enslaves the giants with the crown. He tells the giants they will attack Cloister at dawn and allows them to eat Isabelle and Elmont. Jack rescues Isabelle and Elmont as one of the giants prepares to cook Elmont as a pig-in-a-blanket. The trio makes for the beanstalk, where Jack causes the giant guarding the beanstalk to fall off the realm's edge. Seeing the giant's body, Brahmwell orders the beanstalk cut down to avoid an invasion by the giants.

Jack and Isabelle head down the beanstalk, while Elmont stays to confront Roderick. Elmont kills Roderick, but Fallon takes the crown before Elmont can claim it, and Elmont is forced to escape down the beanstalk. Jack, Isabelle, and Elmont all survive the fall after the beanstalk is cut down. As everyone returns home, Jack warns that the giants are using Roderick's beans to create beanstalks to descend down to Earth and attack Cloister.

The giants chase Jack, Isabelle, and Brahmwell into the castle, where Elmont fills the moat with oil and sets it on fire. Fallon falls in the moat and breaks into the castle from below. As the siege continues, Fallon captures Jack and Isabelle, but Jack throws the final bean down Fallon's throat, causing a beanstalk to rip apart his body. Jack takes the crown and sends the giants back to their realm.

Jack and Isabelle marry and tell the story of the giants to their children. As time passes, the magic crown is crafted into St Edward's Crown and is secured in the Tower of London.
