Aarohan (2010)

Synopsis:
The patriarch Surya Shekhar Chattopadya, steeped in traditional values, is deeply religious person, and a man of firm principals. He treats the predictions of his horoscope like axiomatic truth, little realizing that such predictions, often interpreted in equivocal language, can be quite misleading. His obduracy distances him from his son, Alok, who refuses to put up with his father's unbending attitude to the horoscope. Alok marries outside his caste, and tears up his horoscope, and settles abroad. Suryasekhar's wife an accomplished and educated lady, is reduced to being a mute witness to all this. She has accepted him a lot and never registered protest. She bears everything with quite resigned dignity. Their grandson Arijit comes to stay with them through a strange turn of events and they were overjoyed. But Suryasekhar has decided that that he will die in Benaras (Kashi) to rid himself of the bondage of the eternal cycle of rebirth. He decides to check in Moksha Bhavan a house where people come to die. There Arijit meets Kasturi, Behari women whose mother in law awaits death. Her husband Shyam cannot father a child and the blame falls on Kasturi who refuses to be abused and called ""barren"'. She makes it clear that her husband is no 'man' that he claims to be, because he is attracted to other man. Kasturi takes it up as challenge to prove that she is capable of carrying a child. By yet another turn of events, Arijit decides to marry Kasturi once he knows that he has sired the child she has conceived. As Arijit's parents come to Beneras, and come to know of their relationship, they refuse to accept their son's decision. Alok has a massive heart attack and dies. Suryasekhar is shattered. As the embers of his son's pyre die out, Suryasekhar's wife confronts him for the first time, questioning his unbending faith, and the truth of the prediction of the horoscope. The patriarch realizes what a blunder he has committed. He leads his grandson to the river Ganga to immerse the ashes, and tears up his horoscope and throws it into the river. As the last gesture of atonement, he accepts Kasturi, taking her with him to his house in kolkata, as the first rays of the early morning sun light up the horizon.

Who are Wahabi?

Synopsis:
It is He who has sent down to you, [O Muhammad], the Book; in it are verses [that are] precise - they are the foundation of the Book - and others unspecific. As for those in whose hearts is deviation [from truth], they will follow that of it which is unspecific, seeking discord and seeking an interpretation [suitable to them]. And no one knows its [true] interpretation except Allah. But those firm in knowledge say, "We believe in it. All [of it] is from our Lord." And no one will be reminded except those of understanding. [Who say], "Our Lord, let not our hearts deviate after You have guided us and grant us from Yourself mercy. Indeed, You are the Bestower (Al-Wahhaab)." Surah Aali-Imraan 3:7-8.

Sufism Beginning of Innovations & Tareeqahs ()

Synopsis:
The Prophet (salla'Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said, ".... I have left you upon clear guidance. Its night is like its day. No one deviates from it after me except that he is destroyed." Reported by Ahmad, Ibn Maajah (no. 43) and al-Haakim. It is declared saheeh by Shaikh al-Albaanee in as-Saheehah (no. 937).

Imaam Maalik (rahimahullaah) said: "Whosoever introduces into Islaam an innovation, which he deems is good, then he has claimed that Muhammad has betrayed (the trust of conveying) the Message. Read the saying of Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic: 'This day I have completed your Religion for you, and I have perfected My favour upon you, and I am pleased with Islaam as a Religion for you.' [Surat-ul-Maa'idah: 3] So whatever was not (part of) the Religion on that day, is not (part of) the Religion on this day. And the last part of this ummah (nation) will not be rectified, except by that which its first part was rectified by."

Nargis Dutt ()

Synopsis:
A Documentary on Nargis Dutt.
The documentary starts with the scene of a hospital where the cancer-stricken queen of Indian silver-screen passed her last days. The following scene was her legendary character in 'Mother India' of Mehboob in which Sunil Dutt, her spouse, played as her son. Indian music maestro Naushad Ali paid glowing tributes to Nargis Dutt.
Her brothers Anwar Hussain and Akhtar also discussed the life of Nargis whose original name was Fatima born on June 1, 1929. Her home was an abode of music and poetry. From Allahabad, her family shifted to Kolkata and then Mumbai at a seaside abode. Literature was her love in studies. Jiddan Bai, her mother, was a singer and encouraged her in her pursuits in performing arts.
Baby Rani was her child star name in the talkies. Mohan Babu (Rasheed), her father, on his way to medical studies in England dropped to hear the song of Jiddan Bai became a permanent resident of the house by marrying her. Great director Mehboob gave her the name Nargis.
She performed with Raj Kapoor as well as Dilip Kumar, with light role as well as tragedy, with the same talent and skill. Dilip saw no one with the same versatility adding that she worked without any feeling of burden in a delightful manner before camera.
Lata said that Nargis proved that Indian woman was an ideal wife and an ideal mother. Raj Kapoor said that he still remembered her looks and face when he first met her. He said that she was not only enacted as mother India, she in fact was Mother India. She even risked her life in a fire scene in the film. Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru appreciated her performance. Indira Gandhi nominated her for Rajiya Sabha. Sunil Dutt also had been an MP and her son Sanjay Dutt now intends to enter politics.
While doing work for labourers and health services Nargis lost wait in the process. She developed multiple complications and finally died of cancer on May 3, 1989. Many centres function in many parts of India under Nargis-Dutt Foundation. Her performance in 'Awara' and 'Barsat' was as superb as the music of Shankar J Kishan and mellifluous voice of Lata Jee. A cameraman said that she never grudged if I took more time in preparing a scene. She was the most popular member of Indian troupe in Soviet Union and later participated in an Indo-Soviet production 'Pardesi'. 'Jeewan hay agar zehar to peena hi parhay ga' is a reality she depicted in life as well as in 'Mother India.'

Indian president awarded her Patima Shri Award and she also earned international awards.

The Last Maneater ()

AKA:
Killer Tigers of India

Synopsis:
The Last Maneater is a spectacular documentary about the last tigers in the world to hunt, kill, and eat humans. They live in the Sunderbans, gnarled fingers of thick impenetrable mangrove forest swamps in eastern India. It's a place where the daily quest for a net full of fish, or even an armload of firewood gathered from the forest floor, can prove fatal. Here, up to 80 people every year are killed and eaten by tigers. The villages here are filled with orphans... and widows. And people who have harrowing tales of survival. An adult Bengal tiger can weigh as much as 500 pounds. When it decides to attack, the results are almost always lethal. Guns and armor are of little use in this area where a stealth attack from the rear can occur with no warning. It is the reality of life in the Sunderbans. People here understand the risk. They understand... that in the Sunderbans, humans are not the most dominant animal. That if a tiger decides to kill... it can... and will. This is a place where tigers don't live in fear of people. Here... tigers reign supreme.

Missing Link ()

Synopsis:
Missing Link is a 1988 film written and directed by Carol and David Hughes. The movie is set in Africa roughly one million years ago, at a time when one species of "man-apes" (Australopithecus robustus) was being displaced by the ancestors of modern humans (possibly Homo erectus but they are never named. They are only addressed as man and from the few scenes where they show any visibility, they vaguely resemble modern humans). The film follows the last of the man-apes (Peter Elliott) as he wanders through the wilderness after his tribe is slaughtered by the aggressive humans who have invented the ax and have learned to make use with fire. He journeys through a savanna, an oasis, a desert, and eventually the shores of a beach. Along the way, he avoids the humans that killed his family and witnesses many fantastic sights of wildlife. After experiencing an hallucination brought on by ingesting a hallucinogenic plant (possibly a reference to the stoned ape theory), he realizes the stone ax that he has been carrying after finding it at the site where his tribe was killed is a weapon. When he comes across a human footprint at the ocean shore, he sniffs it and then starts hitting it, wanting revenge against the humans. But he then relents and tosses the ax into the ocean. The closing scene has him sitting mournfully on the beach as the sun sets. The closing text states that the "man-apes" were likely the first species humanity pushed into extinction.

Missing Link is an unusual film in that it blends elements of drama, documentary, and avant-garde cinema. There is no dialogue, though there is narration (by Michael Gambon). There is also very little action. Instead, the film is filled with extended, picturesque sequences reminiscent of the style often used in nature documentaries. Perhaps due to its unconventionality, the movie was not a commercial success.

Director: Carol and David Hughes

Geheimnis Tibet (1943)

AKA:
Secret Tibet: Schutzstaffel Expedition to Tibet

Synopsis:
In 1938,Heinrich Himmler sponsored an expedition to Tibet lead by Ernst Schäfer and composed by several other SS scientists, officially to study the region's flora and fauna and to take scientific measurements of the Earths magnetic fields. The expedition was also sent to find traces of the origins of the Aryan race in Tibet which was where Himmler thought evidence of could be found. As a follower of the Hollow Heart theory, Himmler was also looking in Tibet for the "doors to Agharta", the mythical underground town, home of the "Unknown Masters". This film is a Third Reich era documentary of that expedition. Ernst Schäfer (1910-1992) was a famous German hunter and zoologist in the 1930s, specializing in ornithology. He is most famous for his three expeditions to Tibet in 1931, 1934-1935, and 1938-1939, the first two led by the American Brooke Dolan II, and the third led by himself under the patronage of Himmler's Ahnenerbe organization. In July 1934, during his second expedition in Asia, he met the then exiled Panchen Lama, Thubten Chökyi Nyima, in Hangzhou, China. Schäfer wrote several books, including Berge, Buddhas und Bären (Mountains, Buddhas and Bears), and helped to produce this film.

Geheimnis Tibet was never released to the public in Nazi Germany but intended as a film for SS internal use only.

Tesla Electricity ()

Synopsis:
Nikola Tesla was beyond a doubt the greatest genius of the 20th century. Our way of life today, the technology that we take for granted, is all possible because of this one incredible man from Europe. However, despite all of his contributions to science, his name is little remembered outside the field of electronics and physics. In fact, Thomas Edison is often mistakenly credited in school textbooks with inventions that were developed and patented by Tesla. Most scholars acknowledge that Tesla's obscurity is partially due to his eccentric ways and fantastic claims during the waning years of his life, of communicating with other planets and death rays. It is now known that many of these fantastic inventions of Tesla are scientifically accurate and workable. It has simply taken mankind this long to catch up to the astonishing ideas of a man who died in 1943.

The Secret Of Nikola Tesla ()

Nikola Tesla - Master of Lightning ()

Synopsis:
This amazing documentary gives long overdue recognition to a great and misunderstood man of science. The life of Nikola Tesla is an inspiring example of the power of one man to change the world with technology and revolutionary ideas.

Nikola Tesla (1856-1943) was one of the most fascinating scientists of the 20th century. He invented, developed or imagined the technology that brought us electricity, remote control, neon and florescent lighting, radio transmission and much more... all the basic inventions that now connect the world with power and information.

He was a brilliant and charismatic immigrant whose talent took him to the height of celebrity. He locked horns with Thomas Edison, J. Pierpont Morgan, Guglielmo Marconi, and George Westinghouse. Mark Twain praised his genius. They are all characters in this program, the very first to tell the full story of Tesla's life and work.

Like many geniuses, Tesla was not a conventional man. He gave his life to realize his visions, while others made millions with his inventions. Tragically, he died penniless and nearly forgotten.

Basic Electricity ()

Synopsis:
Professor Kleitz discusses Basic Electrical Principles as a pre-requisite to understanding Digital Electronics. The material is from Appendix F in his textbook.

Nikola Tesla - The Untold Story ()

AKA:
Nikola Tesla: The Genius Who Lit The World New World Order

Synopsis:
This program reveals the discoveries of a forgotten genius, many of which went virtually unnoticed for nearly a century. Nikola Tesla is considered the father of our modern technological age and one of the most mysterious and controversial scientists in history. How did this obscure visionary from what is now Yugoslavia, lay the foundation for modern communications and energy research?

Nikola Tesla's contributions to science and technology include the invention of radio, television, radio-astronomy, remote control and robotics, radar, medical x-ray and the wireless transmission of electricity. Many of Nikola Tesla's inventions were and in some cases still are considered too revolutionary by government agencies and the power brokers of the time and are discussed in detail in this program.

Encyclopedia Britannica lists Nikola Tesla as one of the top ten most fascinating people in history. So why is he virtually unknown to the general public? This program is a penetrating study of the life and mind of a scientific superman who, against all odds, dedicated his life to the task of designing and improving technology for the service and advancement of humanity.

The Missing Secrets Of Nikola Tesla ()

Synopsis:
Nikola Tesla (10 July 1856 - 7 January 1943) was an inventor and a mechanical and electrical engineer. He is frequently cited as one of the most important contributors to the birth of commercial electricity and is best known for his many revolutionary developments in the field of electromagnetism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Tesla's patents and theoretical work formed the basis of modern alternating current (AC) electric power systems, including the polyphase system of electrical distribution and the AC motor, with which he helped usher in the Second Industrial Revolution.

Born an ethnic Serb in the village of Smiljan, Croatian Military Frontier, in the territory of today's Croatia, he was a subject of the Austrian Empire by birth and later became an American citizen. After his demonstration of wireless communication through radio in 1894 and after being the victor in the "War of Currents", he was widely respected as one of the greatest electrical engineers who worked in America. Much of his early work pioneered modern electrical engineering and many of his discoveries were of groundbreaking importance. During this period, in the United States, Tesla's fame rivaled that of any other inventor or scientist in history or popular culture, but due to his eccentric personality and his seemingly unbelievable and sometimes bizarre claims about possible scientific and technological developments, Tesla was ultimately ostracized and regarded as a mad scientist. Tesla never put much focus on his finances. It is said he died impoverished, at the age of 86.

Die Tricks der Lebensmittelindustrie ()

Synopsis:

The Silk Road ()

Synopsis:
01. Glories Of Ancient Chang An
Begin your journey through China at the Great Wall and from there witness such sights as the incredible Clay Army, the amazing World's Largest Tomb and the fantastic Underground Murals of the Most Beautiful Princess Who Ever Lived.

02. A Thousand Kilometers Beyond The Yellow River
Leave Xi-an and cross the Yellow River on a goat-skin raft. Visit the giant Buddha at Bing-li-si, traverse the forbidding He-xi Corridor, stroll the streets of the citadel town of Zhang-ye, and visit the Nie-pan Buddha, already 200 years old when Marco Polo lived there in the fourteenth century.

03. The Art Gallery in the Desert
The Art Gallery in the Desert. Focuses on the famous Mogao caves at Dunhuang, which are indeed an art gallery of Buddhist art spanning centuries. Excellent closeups and sufficient analysis in a clear fashion to give some appreciation for the imagery and the changes in artistic style, reflecting the cultural exchange that took place on the Silk Road. It would have been valuable to have had more information on the treasure trove of manuscripts that the famous explorer Aurel Stein acquired at Dunhuang early in this century and took off to the British Library, although in several places the series shows photographs of what he discovered and items from other museum collections.

04. The Dark Castle
The Dark Castle. Includes a good sequence illustrating facets of travel via camel caravan along the Silk Road. Focus is on the ruins of the fortress-city of Karakhoto (one of the centers of the Xixia or Tangut state that flourished in the region just prior to the Mongol invasion of the thirteenth century), where the modern archaeological/film crew finds various artifacts including pieces of silk and written texts. This film would be quite appealing for younger students because it includes some dramatization of the semi-legendary events surrounding the conquest and destruction of Karakhoto by the armies of Chingis Khan.

05. In Search of the Kingdom of Lou-Lan
In Search of the Kingdom of Lou-Lan. Introduces the region just east of the Taklamakan Desert--with striking shots of the terrain. Has an interesting segment on the way in which Lake Lop Nor has "moved" historically and the explanations why. Various archaeological objects--coins, Roman beads, written texts--showing the international connections of the kingdom that flourished here nearly 2000 years ago. One of most interesting segments shows the excavation of some tombs, with the uncovering of mummified bodies.

06. Across The Taklamakan Desert
Across the Taklamakan Desert. Again a good sense of the varied geography, both physical and human, including a tour of a provincial oasis town and its market. Information on the main population of the area, the Uighurs, with interesting filming of such things as the making of the characteristic flat bread that is a staple of their diet. Then follows along the route of the famous explorer Stein to visit the ruins of Miran and Niya, now well out in desert, but at one time located on rivers and centers of sophisticated administration, economic and religious life. One sees, among other things, the wooden beams of a large "palace." Some of pictures taken from the artifacts removed to museums by Stein and others, including the mummified bodies of a couple, the silk robe that one of them was wrapped in, and the various objects of daily life that had been buried with them. [On these mummies, see the March 1996 National Geographic.] Clear evidence of the international ties of the Silk Road cities, with both western and Chinese artistic influences

07. Khotan-Oasis of Silk and Jade
Khotan: Oasis of Silk and Jade. A camel caravan brings big chunks of jade down from the Kun-Lun Mountains south of the Taklamakan Desert. Comments on religious significance of jade in China; picture of spectacular suit of jade armor from a tomb. People searching for jade in a river; then the jade market in town. The silk industry--weaving and spinning. The famous tale of the "Silk Princess" who smuggled silkworms out of China and is depicted in one of paintings discovered by the archaeologist Aurel Stein. Expedition searches for that site in the desert (Dandan Oilik) but fails to locate it. Scenes of typical Uighur market day in Khotan, but Japanese film crew play the foolish tourists. A silk dance, with the female dancers carrying plates of cocoons. Visit to the local ice house in the heat of mid-summer. Some rather silly dialogue (When did you get the ice? In January? Oh, you mean in winter!) and a remarkable assertion that Uighurs have little furniture in their houses today because once (hundreds of years ago!) they were nomads. Other somewhat demeaning comments on Uighurs. Mosque scene with some 5000 worshippers on Friday--China as a bastion of freedom of religion today. A little about history of Khotan as a Buddhist center before the arrival of Islam in tenth century. Visits there by Xuanzang, the 7th century pilgrim, and by Marco Polo in the thirteenth century.

08. A Heat Wave Called Turfan
A Heat Wave Called Turfan. Mud lake below sea level, excessive heat in summer with people sleeping in open air on roofs. Spectacular ruins of city of Gaochang (Kocho) with a fair amount on history and culture and some pictures of important artifacts including Manichaean and Nestorian paintings. Emphasis on cosmopolitan nature of the town. Impressive T'ang era fortress of Jiaohe (Yarkhoto) on a large plateau, but minimal comment on its history. Importance of grape harvest and raisins to the local economy; shows process of drying the raisins. The important Bezeklik Buddhist caves in nearby mountains, but talks as much about destruction by locals and foreign archaeologists as it does about content of paintings. One painting shows supposedly foreign ambassadors from more than a millenium ago. Interesting footage of the karez underground irrigation system including a walk through the channels. Overall, a lot of useful material in this film.

09. Through the Tian Shan Mountains by Rail
Through the Tian Shan Mountains by Rail. The 470 km. trip from Turfan to Korla, starting in the Gobi region, crossing the eastern Tien Shan and down into the northern Tarim Basin oases. Travel was at time railroad just completed (ca. 1980); much of footage and narrative is a paean to the benefits the railroad would bring to the indigenous peoples. Apart from lots of photos of the steam locomotive passing through sometimes stark landscape, also some good camel shots, since several taken along for the expedition to test how difficult camel travel over the mountain passes would have been for historic Silk Road travelers. Some interesting shots of T'ang era fortifications, especially at Iargo (?). Construction technique not packed earth layering but layering of rounded boulders with reed mats. Brief section on some 2500-year-old burials of nomads, with some elegant gold animal-style artifacts. Notes that even in 400 B.C. area had active E-W exchange. Brief music/dance performance in front of yurt of local Torft (? Oirot?) nomads. Tragedy of their Kalmuck ancestors in 18th century alluded to but not properly explained. At Yanqi (Karashahr) oasis on Kaigdu River, notes population is Hui Muslims, but when Xuanzang passed through in 7th century it had been Buddhist. Brief glimpse of Shi Koshing Buddhist cave complex in ruins; a few of sculpted artifacts.

10. Journey Into Music:South Through the Tian Shan Mountains
Journey Into Music: South Through the Tian Shan Mountains. From marshy 800 sq. mile lake through what film calls the most formidable pass in the southern Tien-Shan and on to Kucha, some 300 km. west of the pass. Some discussion of how important and cosmopolitan it had been in earlier centuries. Donkey cart "busses." Flourishing market today ("abundance of consumer goods in recent years" with nylon blouses the rage, not silk). Emphasizes fame of Kucha for its fruit and its music. Music theme throughout this film is one of its strengths: Harvest and threshing scenes and their songs, a cradle song, harvest festival with mashrab music and various traditional instruments such as dop, dotar, asatar. A tray dance, a performance of a traditional love song by an elderly woman accompanying herself on the long-necked lute, a wedding scene and its music. Interspersed is effort of Expedition to determine whether any of the instruments today are similar to ones that had come to Japan in earlier centuries via Silk Road and Kucha. Historic artifacts and paintings brought to bear--a painted box showing an "orchestra" which had been excavated in Buddhist ruins of Subashi Castle in 1903; paintings in Qumtura and Kizyl caves. In former find a 4-stringed instrument depicted which is like the Japanese lute (biwa), Tocharian inscriptions and images with Western features. In Kizyl Caves, largest such complex after Mogao in Dunhuang, the "Music Cave" (no. 38) with many images of angels (apsaras) playing instruments. One has a 5-string lute, the unique example of which in Japan being one in the 8th-century collection of the Sho-so-in. It seems to have traveled from India, via the Tarim Basin, and then East. Xuanzang quoted about the superiority of the instrumental music of Kucha. This film has a great deal of interest.

11. Where Horses Fly Like the Wind
Where Horses Fly Like the Wind. On the Kazakhs of the Northern Tien Shan (the narration notwithstanding, not to be confused with the Cossacks). Views of horses and sheep in mountain pastures. The oasis city of Hami, famous from early times for its melons. Interesting scene of salt production. At Hami, the "Silk Road" branches, one route going south of the Tien Shan to Turfan, Korla and Kucha; the other north to Lake Barkol. Han armies pursued Huns as far as Barkol. Interesting views of hospitality in a yurt, including ceremony of serving a sheep's head. Shows milking a mare, and discusses the importance of mare's milk in diet, but does not explain adequately processing of milk products. Interspersed with views of current nomadic life are historical references and quotations regarding the nomads from the early Chinese histories. Even in this region Han-era signal towers, which were manned by thousands of soldiers. Stress on fact that it was here the Han emperor sought the "heavenly horses" for his armies. Script errs in saying Chingis Khan led "Golden Horde" through here (Golden Horde is the common designation for the western part of the Mongol empire which came into being only after his death). Legend of Prince Mu meeting the Queen Mother of the West (Xi Wang Mu) in Tienshi Lake. Interesting footage of Kazakh wedding; several scenes with music. September market at L. Tsaidam when nomads begin to descend from their summer pastures. Stress on new prosperity, availability of manufactured goods, and ethnic diversity ("races"). Ends with problematic assertion that sedentary agriculturalists change, but way of life of nomads never does (=part of the "romance" of the Silk Road). The expedition unable to cross border into USSR near where Ili River enters Kazakhstan.

12. Two Roads to the Pamirs
Two Roads to the Pamirs. 3700 km. from Chang-an to Kashgar--in old days a full year's journey. Kashgar's main mosque and celebration of end of Ramadan with thousands in square; music and dancing (for men only)."Tomb of the Fragrant Concubine" (Abakh Khoja Mausoleum), burial place of 17th and 18th century Naqshbandi Sufi rulers; legend of the Kashgari woman Xiangfei, who met tragic fate as emperor's concubine. School for non-Chinese--cute kids identify their ethnic groups in rogues' gallery lineup. Bazaar and craftsmen--lathe run by hand bow; beaten copper pots, making jewelry, musical instruments--continuation of tradition of Kashgar as commercial center. Marco Polo quoted on city. Modern truck caravan trade over Karakorum Highway to Gilgit in Pakistan--barter exchange with silk, ceramics, tea, tools, thermoses from China in exchange for dried fruit, nuts, nylon scarves, medicines. Dancing entertainment. 1300-yr.-old Buddhist caves on outskirts of city, the oldest in Xinjiang (narrator mis-speaks--200-300 BCE), but all despoiled now. Drive toward Pakistan with scenic views, nomadic herders; scene of yak caravan crossing glacier to illustrate difficulty of mountain travel. Old fort at Tashkurgan; Ptolemy cited for report from Greek merchants about "Stone Tower" (the film does not mention it likely was not the one here...). Xuanzang passed through here. Tajiks of region; an interesting Tajik village wedding with dancing. Ends on Khunjerab Pass, 4943 m.

Gangland - Blood River ()

Gangland - Basic Training ()

Synopsis:
America's military is becoming an unlikely but wickedly effective training ground for gangland soldiers. Are America's armed forces creating the best trained, best equipped, deadliest gang-bangers in history?

In 2005, Richard Valdemar, one of the country's leading gang experts and a 30-year veteran of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, issued a warning: "Gangs around the country were sending their members to the military to learn urban warfare." The FBI believes gang members enlist to receive weapons, combat and convoy support training; to obtain access to weapons and explosives; or as an alternative to incarceration.

Gang members have infiltrated America's military. Gang graffiti is visible everywhere in the battle zones of Iraq. Hand signs are flashed at every gathering of soldiers, and are commonplace in frontline photographs. On-base gang activity is responsible for a rash of crime and violence that rivals some prison systems. And most disturbing, after receiving the world's best training and conditioning in tactics and killing techniques, gang members return to their home turf ready to wage war against law enforcement, rival gangs and ordinary citizens.

In this eye-opening episode of GANGLAND, stunning surveillance footage shows bangers applying their military training in deadly gun battles. Experts analyze the gang problem within the armed forces, and current and former bangers speak out about gang life before, during and after a military career.

This twofold crisis — gangs infecting the military and gang-bangers bringing military tactics home to the streets — becomes stunningly clear in GANGLAND: BASIC TRAINING.

Gangland - Gangster City ()

Synopsis:
A regrettable, tragic side-effect of warfare is known euphemistically as "collateral damage." From Dresden to Baghdad, it is a sad historical commonplace that noncombatants, innocent civilians, will suffer terribly for the misfortune of living in a battle zone.

In Chicago, the collateral damage of gang warfare includes everyday men and women struggling to conduct ordinary lives and, most terribly, children too young to know about the evils of the world, much less to fall victim to them.

In 1992, Dantrell Davis became a household name when the seven-year-old was struck by a sniper's bullet during an all-out gun battle. Dantrell was the third Jenner Elementary School student slain by gangs in a seven month period.

Dantrell's death served as a wakeup call and stirred government and community leaders to action, but was it too late? The level of violence between and among Chicago's gangs was clearly out of control. Officials hoped destroying the city's troubled public housing would bring an end to the carnage being wrought by the factions. Instead, leveling the high-rises only caused the problem to spread.

In this important episode, GANGLAND examines the unimaginably violent environment of Chicago's battle zones and tracks efforts to eliminate deadly gang activity there.

In just a ten-year span, the Hells Angels have netted a rap sheet that includes drug distribution, motorcycle theft, extortion, witness intimidation and murder.

Gangland - Blood in, Blood out ()

Synopsis:
See how blind devotion and strict organization make La Nuestra Familia one of the deadliest and most effective criminal groups in America.
They may be in prison for life, but the shot-callers of La Nuestra Familia still run gang business on the outside with ruthless efficiency. Ray Sanchez learned this the hard way in 2001 when "Lil Mondo" Frias, following a standing hit order issued by leaders incarcerated in Pelican Bay Prison, shot him in the back of the neck.
With a formal, written constitution and an unshakeable loyalty among its members, this West Coast operation has proved a major headache to law enforcement both on the street and behind bars. GANGLAND uncovers the organization of this group of devoted drugs-and-murder specialists and reveals its most notorious operations. See what law enforcement is up against and what they're doing about it.
In this gripping expos?, you'll find out what they really mean by "BLOOD IN, BLOOD OUT!"

Gangland - Shoot to Kill ()

Synopsis:
With an estimated 2500 members and powerful criminal connections, Florencia-13 or F-13 is L.A.'s largest and deadliest Hispanic gang. The gang is one of the oldest in L.A.'s notorious South Central neighborhood. When rivals threaten to move in on their lucrative drug trade, they use any means necessary to protect their empire.

Gangland - One Blood ()

Gangland - Race Wars ()

Synopsis:
Gang-on-gang violence has always been a problem, but lately it's taken on a far more sinister edge.
In southwest LA's Harbor Gateway neighborhood, gang violence has exploded. Earlier this year, Latino gang members were arrested for shooting and killing a 14-year-old African-American girl simply because of her race. L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa succinctly stated: "Enough's enough."
This teenage girl's death is believed to be part of a larger RACE WAR started by Los Angeles' Hispanic gangs. Jockeying for turf with rival groups, they figured the easy way to secure territory was through ethnic cleansing. African-American gangs have started to respond in kind. It's part of a trend that has lead to all out gang warfare on the city's streets.
"Colors" has taken on a new meaning in GANGLAND and will only lead to one thing: RACE WAR.

What I Saw in North Korea and Why it Matters (2011)

Presented by Siegfried S. Hecker, Center for International Security and Cooperation, Stanford University

ABSTRACT

North Korea Nuclear Proliferation, Negotiation and the human aspects of an estranged country.

My seventh trip to North Korea in seven years produced another surprise -- North Korea decided to build its own light-water reactor and uranium enrichment facility. During my first visit I was shown plutonium produced in its Yongbyon nuclear complex to convince me they have the bomb. For more than 30 years, Pyongyang has moved along parallel paths of nuclear energy and nuclear weapons, opting to chose bombs over electricity. I will discuss how North Korea got the bomb, why it got it, and the prospects of whether or not it will give up the bomb. Finally, I will try to show with photos and stories of how North Korea is not such a hermit kingdom after all.

Ruthless - LTTE's Final Crimes Against Humanity ()

Synopsis:
"Ruthless" the documentary movie produced by the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development was launched on Wednesday morning at the auditorium of Media Center for National Security.

The Documentary depicts many horrendous atrocities committed by Tamil Tigers, during the past three decade long war. So far, quite a few were revealed to the world. Majority of them were hidden and remained unknown and needed to be unearthed to show the world who Tamil Tigers really were. Sometimes, people who have witnessed them still feared to reveal their horrific experiences since; they know who LTTE were when they were under them.

However, the documentary "Ruthless" recounts true accounts of survivors who once, had lived under brutal and repressive regime of Tamil Tigers; now speak freely, of what they had experienced during the days of war.

The Tamil Tigers not only targeted innocent civilians but also targeted many religious places, the clergy, children and even their disabled and wounded cadres.

The "Ruthless" is a story about such crimes against humanity.

It is well known to the world that many calculated efforts are being taken by various groups to whitewash the LTTE and its atrocities and accusing the government of Sri Lanka for allegedly committed war crimes instead.

The Director General of the Media Centre for National Security Mr. Laxman Hulugalle addressing a Media Conference held in Colombo in connection with the release of the DVD said that this DVD cassette is a fitting response to the Tamil diaspora and Channel 4 who supported the tiger terrorists showing fabricated information during the recent past, and for the international media.

He said that the Tamil community in the North and East has gone through a harrowing ordeal during the past three decades due to war and terrorism, and they had no freedom even to speak against the bitter experiences they had to face. He further said that this cassette has been produced not for political advantage or for any personal benefits, but to give a correct understanding about the experiences of the Tamil community of the North and East during the war period.

The "Ruthless" is released amidst such allegations to show the world what really took place during the time of war.

Media spokesmen of the tri-forces and the Police also attended the Media Conference.
