AKA:
Vtackovia, siroty a blazni >> Czech
Birds, Orphans and Fools >> English
Les oiseaux, les orphelins et les fous >> France
Vögel, Waisen, Narren >> West German

Synopsis:
This film is equal parts 1969 acid trip, socialist-era Eastern European allegorical political manifesto and mirror held up to the Slovak soul. Maybe the surreal aspect of the film is just an accident! In any case, this film shows us the rubble of Bratislava just after the Prague spring. Maybe Spring came late to Bratislava. Maybe it never came at all. There are some great (and classic) surreal scenes, but there is very little continuity to the story - in fact very little story per say at all. To recommend it, this film still has a cutting-edge feel more than 30 years after it was originally made. Its basic premise seems to be that life (or at least life in the Czechoslovak Soviet Socialist Republic at the end of the 1960s) drives one mad - and that madness leads to unthinkable barbarity. Hence the few truly nauseating scenes of violence. Still, a unique look at a unique place and time, with memorable images. View at your own risk.

Songs of Ali Farka Toure ()

Synopsis:
He was born in 1939 in the village of Kanau, on the banks of the Niger River in the cercle of Gourma Rharous in the northwestern Malian region of Tombouctou. His family moved to the nearby village of Niafunké when he was still an infant. He was the tenth son of his mother but the only one to survive past infancy. "The name I was given was Ali Ibrahim, but it's a custom in Africa to give a child a strange nickname if you have had other children who have died", Touré was quoted as saying in a biography on his Record Label, World Circuit Records. His nickname, "Farka", chosen by his parents, means "donkey", an animal admired for its tenacity and stubbornness: "Let me make one thing clear. I'm the donkey that nobody humps on!" He was descended from the ancient military force known as the Arma, and was ethnically tied to the Songrai (Songhai) and Fula peoples of northern Mali. As the first African bluesman to achieve widespread popularity on his home continent, Touré was often known as "the African John Lee Hooker". Musically, the many superpositions of guitars and rhythms in his music were similar to John Lee Hooker's hypnotic blues style. He usually sang in one of several African languages, mostly Songhay, Fulfulde, Tamasheq or Bambara as on his breakthrough album, Ali Farka Touré, which established his reputation in the world music community. His first North American concert was in Harrison Hot Springs, British Columbia[citation needed]. 1994's Talking Timbuktu, a collaboration with Ry Cooder, sold promisingly well in Western markets, but was followed by a hiatus from releases in America and Europe. He reappeared in 1999 with the release of Niafunké, a more traditional album focusing on African rhythms and beats. Touré was the mentor and uncle of popular Malian musician Afel Bocoum[citation needed]. Some of Ali Farka Touré's songs and tunes have been used in different programmes, films and documentaries. For instance, his guitar riff on the song "Diaraby", from the album Talking Timbuktu, was selected for the Geo-quiz segment of The World PRI-BBC program, and was retained by popular demand when put to a vote of the listeners. This song is likewise used in 1998 as a soundtrack for the film L'Assedio (Besieged) by the Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci[citation needed]. His songs Cinquante six, Goye Kur and Hawa Dolo from the album The Source are also used as a soundtrack in the French film Fin août, début septembre (Late August, Early September) directed in 1998 by Olivier Assayas. In 2002 he appeared with Black American blues and reggae performer Corey Harris, on an album called Mississippi to Mali (Rounder Records). Toure and Harris also appeared together in Martin Scorsese's 2003 documentary film Feel Like Going Home, which traced the roots of blues back to its genesis in West Africa. The film was narrated by Harris and features Ali's performances on guitar and njarka. In 2004 Touré became mayor of Niafunké and spent his own money grading the roads, putting in sewer canals and fuelling a generator that provided the impoverished town with electricity. In September 2005, he released the album In the Heart of the Moon, a collaboration with Toumani Diabaté, for which he received a second Grammy award. His last album, Savane, was posthumously released in July 2006. It was received with wide acclaim by professionals and fans alike and has been nominated for a Grammy Award in the category "Best Contemporary World Music Album"[citation needed]. The panel of experts from the World Music Chart Europe (WMCE), a chart voted by the leading World Music specialists around Europe, chose Savane as their Album of the Year 2006, with the album topping the chart for three consecutive months (September to November 2006). The album has also been listed as No. 1 in the influential Metacritic's "Best Albums of 2006" poll, and No. 5 in its all-time best reviewed albums. Ali Farka Touré has also recently been nominated for the BBC Radio 3 awards 2007. On March 7, 2006, the Ministry of Culture of Mali announced his death at age 66 in Bamako from bone cancer, against which he had been battling for some time. His record label, World Circuit, said that he recorded several tracks with his son, Vieux Farka Touré, for Vieux's debut album which was released in late 2006

Doctors Of Death ()

Synopsis:
In the 1930s, Japan's notorious Unit 731 carried out brutal experiments on the population of recently-invaded Manchuria. Whole villages and towns were deliberately infected with plague, and sufferers were dissected alive.

Prisoners of war were shot and operated on without anaesthetic so army doctors could practise field surgery. In World War II Germany, concentration camp doctors like Josef Mengele selected twins and Romany prisoners for obscure medical experiments, and killed enemy prisoners in low temperature or high altitude tests, supposedly to protect their own sailors and airmen.

After the war, many Nazi 'Doctors of Death' were brought to justice. But in Japan the head of Unit 731 cut a deal with US intelligence; the Americans knew they could never replicate biological data gained through experiments on humans. There are suggestions the US used Japanese bio-weapons in the Korean War -- but America began to suspect the North Koreans had their own unorthodox methods: brainwashing US prisoners with drugs.

It was the start of a chemical arms race, reaching its peak in the 1960s and '70s with LSD as the mind-control secret weapon of both sides, intended to cripple the enemy without firing a shot. The US showed drugs experiments in army-sponsored TV documentaries, while in Czechoslovakia -- the drugs laboratory for the whole Eastern Bloc - the state-controlled movie industry was enrolled to shoot surreal feature films portraying the drugs experience.

Besides biological and chemical weapons, both Americans and Soviets routinely exposed their own soldiers to nuclear fallout in A-bomb tests. According to General Jan Sejna, the highest-ranking military defector from the East, the Soviets even tied living prisoners of war to stakes as human guinea-pigs in their nuclear tests.

The film has a moving and shocking interview with a Japanese doctor who operated on unanaesthetised prisoners. A captured US pilot is seen making an apparently false confession in Korea. A Czech military chemist explains how chemical weapons are deployed, and a victim of a drug-fuelled interrogation describes the experience. The man who debriefed Czech defector Jan Sejna describes the terrifying network of experimentation behind chemical, biological and atomic weapons. The Cold War is over, but weapons development -- and testing -- continues.

Hitler's Henchmen ()

Synopsis:
"Hitler's Henchmen" is a six-part series that portrays the men who aided Adolf Hitler in his rise to power and serviced the infernal machinery of the Third Reich. The Nuremberg Trials play an important role here: in a historical first, the International War Crimes Tribunal passed judgment on leading Nazi paladins for their unparalleled atrocities while exposing to the world the infamy of the Hitler regime and its leaders. ZDF uses newly discovered archive material and interviews with surviving family members and Nazi insiders to draw historical psychograms of Hitler's closest aides. Conceived as a sequel to our six-part series "Hitler," "Hitler's Henchmen" offers in-depth personal and political profiles of six men who became architects of the destruction of Europe. Portraits of the men who carried out Hitler's plans: ZDF's sequel about the men who consolidated Hitler's reign and turned his plans into action. They wove the complicities and plots without which Hitler could have never perpetrated the crime of the century. They helped to sway the judges and the bureaucrats, the armed forces and the police, the scientists and the industrialists, the students and their teachers to the regime's ways of thinking. What kind of people were they? What inspired them to serve a corrupt administration with such enthusiasm and devotion? How did their careers unfold and their fates end? The series answers these and other questions by examining six of Hitler's cohorts. The portraits of these aides-de-camp provide viewers with a revealing psychogram of "Hitler's willing executors." The films present for the first time newly discovered film clips and sound recordings from international archives. Recent revelations provided by historical research and interviews with former coworkers, relatives, and victims are also shown.

Nuremberg Trials (1950)

When former head of the Nazi Air Force Hermann Goring and other surviving members of the Nazi elite went on trial on November 20, 1945, the world watched with bated breath to witness the outcome of the groundbreaking case. Charged with the murder of millions of innocent civilians and set before the world to face judgment, the Nuremburg Trials offered a brief glimmer of justice to those lives had been affected by Hitler's atrocities, and in this release history buffs are afforded a closer look than ever before at the trial that held the attention of an entire planet.

Jai Santoshi Maa (1975)

Synopsis:
Maa Santoshi is an emblem of love, contentment, forgiveness, happiness and hope. It is so believed that fasting and praying for her for 16 consecutive Fridays brings peace and prosperity in ones family.

Santoshi Maa inspires an individual to cherish family values and to come out of the crisis with one's determination. Santoshi Maa is also considered to be an incarnation of Mother Durga and is widely worshipped through out India and by Indians residing outside India.

Vrata-katha

Unlike other Indian mythological films which were based on the Hindu epics or the Puranic scriptures, Jai Santoshi Maa was based on a popular pamphlet about the vrata katha (legend of the ritual fast) of Santoshi Mata's Friday vrata. The vrata katha is as follows: An old woman had seven sons, the youngest of whom was irresponsible so she served him the leftovers of his brother's meals as his daily meal. The wife of the youngest son got to know this and told her husband, who left the house to seek his fortune. He acquired work with a merchant and became wealthy, but forgot about his wife. His wife was tormented by her in-laws in absence of her husband. Once, she came to know about the 16-week Santoshi Ma vrata and performed it. As a result, Santoshi Mata appeared in her husband's dream and informed him of his wife's plight. He returned home wealthy and set up a separate household with his wife. In the udyapan ceremony of the vrata, the in-laws plotted against the wife and served sour food to the eight boys, offending Santoshi Mata. As a consequence, her husband was arrested. The wife re-performed the vrata and the udyapan. Her husband was released from prison and she soon bore a son. Once, the goddess visited the family, in a terrifying form; while the in-laws fled, the wife recognized the goddess and worshipped her. Then the in-laws asked forgiveness of the goddess and the whole family was blessed by the goddess. A. K. Ramanujan calls this tale with nameless characters as "the most interior kind of folktales: those generally told by women within domestic space." The vrata katha also does not associate the goddess with Ganesha—the god of obstacle removal and beginnings, who is described as her father in the film and other devotee literature.

How the earth was made: Everest ()

AKA:
Entstehung der Erde >> German

Synopsis:
There's a lot of information in How the Earth Was Made, but perhaps the most interesting relates to time. Quite often, the numbers are so staggering that scientists refer to it as "deep time," an appropriate term when one grapples with the notion that our planet is 4.5 billion years old, or that the oceans were formed by rainfall that lasted literally millions of years, or that 700 million years ago, Earth was completely covered by ice that was a mile thick, with surface temperatures reaching minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit. On the other end of the scale are numbers that seem surprisingly small: for instance, it wasn't until 220 years ago that the accepted church doctrine regarding the planet's age (no more than 6000 years, according to the Bible) was seriously challenged and that the key to its past was found in rocks, not scripture, while the discovery that dinosaurs once ruled the Earth came considerably later than that.
