Earning over Rs 580 million in India and Rs 175 million overseas, the film became the biggest Bollywood hit of the year, as well as one of the biggest Bollywood hits of all time. The movie remains the longest running film in the history of Indian cinema. In March 2009, the film set a record by completing 700 weeks of continuous play in Mumbai theatres.

The film was included in the Cinema India showcase, "The Changing Face of Indian Cinema", which toured the United States in July and August 2004. Indiatimes Movies ranks the movie amongst the 25 Must See Bollywood Films.It was also listed among the only two Hindi films in the 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die list.

Metropolis (1927)


Synopsis:
In the futuristic mega-city Metropolis, the "managers" live in luxurious skyscrapers while the workers live and toil underground. One day, as Freder, the son of Metropolis founder Joh Fredersen, is cavorting in the Eternal Gardens, he sees a beautiful girl who has with her a group of workers' children. She is quickly shooed away, but Freder follows her down to the workers' underworld. There, he sees the horrors of the workers' lives. He is appalled when an enormous machine, the M-Machine, violently explodes, killing dozens of workers. Freder confronts his father about the workers' plight and the accident at the M-Machine. Grot, foreman of the Heart Machine, informs Fredersen of several mysterious maps found in workers' pockets at the M-Machine. Angered by the news, Frederson fires Josaphat, his clerk, and also orders a spy (credited as the "Thin Man") to tail his son.

This is the first film directed by bollywood legendary actor and director Raj Kapoor under RK Films established by him. He did an excellent job with every single thing. While watching the film you could hardly guess that this might be the first movie directed by Raj Kapoor. The opening sequence when he's walking upstairs.the camera angles that were used were brilliantly done. Nargis has given the class performance in the movie.

Synopsis:
Kewal (Raj Kapoor) reluctantly accepts his father (Kamal Kapoor)'s demands to continue the family tradition by studying law and become a successful lawyer just like him. However due to a lack of interest in becoming a lawyer and more interest in opening up his own theatre company, he fails his law exams and is thrown out of the house by his father. Luckily he finds a patron of the arts Rajan, (Premnath) who is the owner of a closen down theatrical company. A childhood romance with a girl named Nimmi haunts his fantasies, and Kewal searches for her in other women, even renaming them after his former sweetheart. With a theater, a play and a feminine image in his mind, he discovers a woman made homeless by Partition (Nargis) and the play of his dreams can at last be written and performed.
